This paid professional development program offers a unique behind-the-scenes look at how strong internal controls, financial oversight, and operational reviews, support organizational integrity and accountability. Interns will gain a clear understanding of the purpose and structure of the internal audit function while developing practical skills in collecting, cleaning, and interpreting operational and financial data. Participants will also strengthen their ability to document processes accurately and professionally—building a solid foundation for careers in auditing, finance, accounting, or public administration.

Internship Program Overview

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Program Duration: June 1, 2026 - August 7, 2026

Rate of Pay:

Undergraduate students – Grade 307 ($16.48/hr)
Graduate students – Grade 316 ($20.89/ hr)
FLSA: Internships are seasonal and non-exempt positions. Summer interns will be scheduled to work up to forty (40) hours in an administrative work week and are ineligible for overtime compensation.

As an Internal Audit Intern, you will:

  • Update and organize audit workpapers, ensuring accuracy and completeness of documentation
  • Organize and maintain audit evidence and supporting documentation in accordance with established standards
  • Participate in process walk-throughs with department staff to observe operations and gain an understanding of internal controls
  • Take detailed, organized notes during meetings and operational observations
  • Compile, clean, and prepare data sets for auditor analysis

You’ll gain experience in:

  • How organizations identify and prioritize risks
  • Understanding how to gather information respectfully and professionally
  • How to collect, clean, and interpret operational and financial data

Department Final Project: Interns will work on a department-specific project designed to improve or enhance a City service. This project will be presented at a culminating ceremony attended by City leaders, highlighting the intern’s contributions and insights gained throughout the program.

Eligibility and Application Requirements
  • Applicants must be one of the following:

    • Current Undergraduate Student:
      Currently enrolled at the college junior level or higher, with an expected graduation date of 2027 or earlier, pursuing a degree in Accounting & Finance, Business Administration, Information Technology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university. Candidates must be in good academic standing.

    • Recent Graduate:
      Completed a degree in Accounting & Finance, Business Administration, Information Technology or a closely related field from an accredited college or university.

    • Current Graduate Student:
      Completed at least one graduate-level semester in Accounting & Finance, Business Administration, Information Technology or a closely related field  from an accredited college or university.

  • College Transcripts: Must submit undergraduate and/or graduate transcripts as applicable. Current or most recent GPA must be 3.0 or higher. 

  • Cover Letter: Applicants must submit a cover letter expressing how their education and experience aligns with this internship and what they hope to gain from the experience. The cover letter is required as a supplement to this application, and should be in Microsoft Word format, not exceeding one page.

  • References: Two (2) references - one of which must be from a current or former professor/advisor are required as part of this application. An automatic email will be generated from our 'government jobs' platform and sent to the references provided.
