THE POSITION
Join an organization where learning and community engagement come together. As an Access Services Library Assistant, you play an important part in helping patrons find what they need. This is an advanced library clerical position in the Access Services section of the State Library involving the application of complex and technical library procedures. This role offers a positive setting where your ideas and teamwork matter. You will help keep library services running with energy and purpose.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position supports daily library operations by carrying out advanced clerical tasks in the Access Services section. The role focuses on circulation work, patron assistance, stacks care, and collaboration across departments. As a Access Services Library Assistant, you will perform the following duties:
- Procedure Support: Identify and organize Access Services procedures with colleagues
- Circulation Work: Handle circulation tasks and resolve inquiries using the ALMA Integrated Library System
- Patron Assistance: Assist visitors at service points including scheduled reference desk coverage
- Stacks Maintenance: Carry out shelf reading, paging, inventory work, and special projects using multiple classification systems
- Interlibrary Loan: Support interlibrary loan processes and locate overdue or missing items
- Collection Prep: Sort and prepare materials for discard, rehousing, or bindery

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment
- Work hours: Monday and Friday - teleworking normal 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM hours. In-office days Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 9:30 AM – 6:00 PM to accommodate library open hours.
- Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to two days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- Two years of library - clerical experience; or
- One year as a Library Assistant 1.
- An associate degree or equivalent training with major course work in library science may be substituted for the required experience.

This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding. If no applicable union-covered bidders apply, other applicants may be considered.

- Library Assistant 1
- Employees who previously held regular civil service status in the job title of the position being filled are also eligible for promotion without examination.
- The promotion without examination requirements are issued in accordance with merit system employment regulations.
- Meritorious service is defined as (a) the absence of any discipline above the level of written reprimand during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the posting, and (b) the last regular or probationary performance evaluation showing an overall rating of satisfactory or higher.
- Applicants must have a minimum of one year in the next lower class by the posting closing date with no break in service.
