#1968 - Accountant Aide

Adjust entries, verify accounting records and review and evaluate current procedures. Prepare trial balances, bank reconciliations and financial statements in accordance with generally acceptable accounting principles. Draft correspondence and/or segments of audit reports; assist in analyzing and evaluating financial reports, and review documents for change in contract terms and conditions and inform staff. Assist in rate-of-return studies; compile materials needed for performance of audits; perform routine data gathering; assist in inventory control systems, and test checking equipment. Since extended travel may be required, at the time of appointment you must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State, or you must demonstrate your ability to meet the travel requirements of the position.

 Trainees will receive a combination of structured training, on-the-job training, and/or practical job performance to gain the knowledge and experience necessary to function at the full performance level.

Scan Form A's (returned checks) and notify the appropriate bureau of receipt and additional information. Run and review daily reports for discrepancies, AP/EFT, and escalate to appropriate units. Input tracking information into a spreadsheet. Scan documents into the electronic data warehouse, ensuring they are accessible and work with other units to catalog correctly. As needed, assist the Receipting Unit with payment receipts.

For appointment to the Accountant Aide Trainee 1, SG-09, you must have:

  • Six credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses AND either one year of experience gathering, preparing and updating financial data, financial reports, and records; or reconciling accounts and data, reviewing accounting and auditing reports, and verifying accuracy of calculations, balances, and supporting documentation; or assisting accountants or auditors conducting financial and program audits by counting, verifying, and reconciling inventory and cash on hand, determining and verifying the accuracy and propriety of transactions, records, reports, and statements.

 

For appointment to the Accountant Aide Trainee 2, SG-11, you must have:

  •  Nine credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses AND either 18 months of experience gathering, preparing and updating financial data, financial reports, and records; or reconciling accounts and data, reviewing accounting and auditing reports, and verifying accuracy of calculations, balances, and supporting documentation; or assisting accountants or auditors conducting financial and program audits by counting, verifying, and reconciling inventory and cash on hand, determining and verifying the accuracy and propriety of transactions, records, reports, and statements.

 

For appointment to the Accountant Aide, SG-13, you must have:

  •  Twelve semester credit hours of accounting, auditing, or taxation courses AND either two years of gathering, preparing, and updating financial data, financial reports, and records; or reconciling data, reviewing accounting and auditing reports, and verifying accuracy of calculations, balances, and supporting documentation; or assisting accountants or auditors conducting financial and program audits by counting, verifying, and reconciling inventory and cash on hand, determining and verifying the accuracy and propriety of transactions, records, reports, and statements.


Competitive Minimum Qualifications:

You must be currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title, eligible under the 55 b/c program, or eligible to transfer to this title under Section 70.1 or 70.4 the Civil Service Law.

For 70.1 or 70.4 transfer to an Accountant Aide, salary grade (SG)-13, you must have one year of permanent competitive, or 55-b/55-c service in an approved title for transfer allocated to an SG-11 or above. SG-09 or above for a Trainee 2, SG-07 or above for a Trainee 1, depending on qualifications.

Additional Requirements:

You must have six credit hours in accounting, auditing, or taxation courses AND either:

  • One year of experience gathering, preparing and updating financial data, financial reports, and records;

OR

  •  One year of reconciling accounts and data, reviewing accounting and auditing reports, and verifying accuracy of calculations, balances, and supporting documentation;

OR

  • One year of assisting accountants or auditors conducting financial and program audits by counting, verifying, and reconciling inventory and cash on hand, determining and verifying the accuracy and propriety of transactions, records, reports, and statements, and completion of a two-year traineeship.

Traineeship Salary Information:

The position may be filled at the Accountant Aide Trainee 1 equated to SG-09 ($40,720), Accountant Aide Trainee 2 equated to SG-11 ($45,494), or full performance Accountant Aide SG-13 ($50,844) based on the candidate’s education, experience, and previous state service. Salary is nonnegotiable. 

Candidates hired at the trainee level will be advanced to the full performance Accountant Aide SG-13 following successful completion of the traineeship.
