About the Department
Public Works Finance is offering a rewarding opportunity to fill an Accountant position within the Department of Public Works. Accountant is a career series ranging from Accountant I through an Accountant III. Qualifications for series level are dependent upon education and experience.
The Finance Division is looking for team-players who will collaborate with staff to provide the financial support needed to continue Public Works’ high level of services. Public Works takes the lead on complex and unique projects that are both challenging and rewarding. The financial responsibility and department-wide collaboration offered with this position allows for continued professional and technical development that is unique at Public Works. The Public Works Department offers a hybrid work schedule (2 days remote work per week) after passing probation period and internal programs like mentoring and mock interviews.
The successful candidate will manage two General Fund Centers 201 – Special Services and 130 – Waste Management in addition to a small PW Administered Special District - Flood Control Zone 1. The Finance Division is looking for a team-player who will collaborate with our internal Waste Management, Water Resources and Development Services staff to provide the financial support needed to continue Public Works’ high level of services. The principal responsibilities for this position will be annual budget development and monitoring, monthly reimbursement invoicing and tracking of receivables for Development Services time and materials contracts, drafting board letters and the annual fee development.

Position Duties
The ideal candidate for this position will have a background in accounting preferably some level of experience in governmental accounting. Being familiar with basic accounting standards and financial transactions with experience using SAP is desired. Experience using excel, word and QuickBooks is preferred.
Public Works is interested in someone who is organized, accurate and self-sufficient while being part of a larger team. Due to this role working with Development Services customers and explaining charges for services, some level of customer service experience would be useful. The successful candidate will need good presentation skills and the ability to coordinate relative information between operations and financial components.
- Education and Experience
A combination of education, training, and experience resulting in the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. An example of qualifying education and experience includes:
Accountant I: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in accounting or a related field, including 12 semester units or 18 quarter units of accounting.- Accountant II: The same as above plus one year of experience at a level equivalent to Accountant I.
- Accountant III: The same as above plus two years of experience at a level equivalent to Accountant II.
