About this role
** INTERNSHIP POSITIONS ARE FILLED THROUGH OUR STAFFING PARTNER; INTERNS ARE NOT DIRECT EMPLOYEES OF SOUTHWEST GAS **
Intern Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m., 40 hours per week during the summer break.
Dates of Internship: May 2026 – August 14, 2026
Department Overview
Division Accounting (CAZ) supports operations through budgeting, expenditure analysis, utility accounting, process documentation, KPI reporting, and administrative controls. This internship provides hands on experience analyzing an end‑to‑end financial/operational process and developing data backed recommendations that streamline work and align with utility accounting practices.
What are the top things an intern can expect to do/learn?
Financial & Analytical: Build cost‑per‑transaction models, quantify administrative effort, and learn fundamentals of capitalization and cost recovery in a utility setting.
Process & Operations: Document current state workflows, identify bottlenecks, and outline a simplified future state.
Project Management: Plan a structured project, run stakeholder interviews, track milestones, and manage deliverables.
Communication & Executive Read‑outs: Synthesize findings and present a concise recommendation package to management.
What qualities/criteria is your department looking for in a successful/ideal intern candidate?
Actively enrolled student at an accredited college or university.
Completion of at least freshman year and majoring in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Analytics, or a related field.
Ability to commit to 40 hours/week in summer and ~10 hours/week if extended into fall.
Candidates must meet the following criteria:
Cumulative or most recent GPA ≥ 3.0
Unofficial transcript required.
Beyond the minimum internship qualifications posted on the intern portal, what additional qualifications must this candidate have?
Major in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business Analytics, or a related field.
Experience with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint
Comfort with basic data analysis and visualization.
Clear written and verbal communication skills; able to interview stakeholders and distill insights.
Organized, curious, and self‑directed; can learn processes quickly and manage deadlines.
Collaborative and professional;

Salary Details
Minimum $25 per hour.
