The Alaska Commission on Postsecondary Education (ACPE) is seeking a qualified individual to fill an Accounting Technician 1 position to process daily loan payments, reconcile payment receipts, import and prepare reports and statements, and ensure desk procedures are maintained.  The successful applicant will work within our Loan Payment team and directly with our Accounting Technician 3 to ensure accuracy, timeliness, and effectiveness of tasks and communications.

This position is in our Juneau office, which is conveniently located in the Vintage Business Park area of Mendenhall Valley, close to the bus line, with plenty of available parking. Positions with ACPE are exempt but eligible for all State of Alaska health care, leave and retirement benefits.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Monitor and track all loan payment activities that occur in multiple bank accounts.
  • Scan checks, prepare payment transfer files, initiate ACHs, and ensure entries are made timely in the State of Alaska’s financial/procurement system (IRIS).
  • Ensure monthly reports and statements are imported/downloaded timely and accurately.
  • Perform payment activity and balance sheet account reconciliations.
  • Maintain desk procedures.
  • Support and communicate with Finance and agency staff.

The ideal candidate will possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: 
 Knowledge of:

  • Bookkeeping practices and accounting procedures, methods, and terminology.
  • Techniques and methods used in reconciliation of accounts.
  • Automated accounting systems.

Skill in:

  • Performing calculations involving fractions, decimals, and percentages structures.
  • Organizing and evaluating data.
  • Operating office machines, including 10-key adding machine and a computer.
  • Using spreadsheets and accounting programs.

Ability to:

  • Collect, assemble, organize and evaluate accounting data.
  • Identify discrepancies or inaccuracies in data and determine how to make corrections.
  • Interpret the significance of accounting data and prepare accurate reports.
  • Operate standard office equipment such as personal computers, copy machines, and calculators.
  • Demonstrate effective verbal communication with colleagues.

Position Duties

One year of clerical work experience maintaining records that included using computer systems and performing basic arithmetic calculations.

Substitutions:

Successful completion of a formal vocational education program in accounting or bookkeeping will substitute for the required experience.

Or

Post-secondary education from an accredited college will substitute for the required experience (3 semester/4 quarter hours equal one month).

While ACPE is in the Department of Education and Early Development for administrative support services only, the Commission and its staff are not subject to the direction of the Commissioner of Education and Early Development nor the State Board of Education.
