The Sales Tax Office within the Treasury Division is hiring an Accounting Technician I to join our team.

WHO WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Sales Tax team is seeking an enthusiastic, accounting-minded individual with strong attention to detail and a commitment to excellent customer service. A successful applicant will be able to demonstrate effective communication across a variety of platforms, including in-person interactions, email, and formal written correspondence with a diverse audience. Dependability in maintaining consistent workplace attendance during business hours is essential. Equally important is the ability to perform a high volume of data entry with accuracy. Last, but not least, we are looking for an adaptable mindset that is open to technology and the modernization of our business processes.

WORKING HOURS AND LOCATION

This position generally works Monday through Friday, 8:00am – 4:30pm with an hour lunch in the middle of the day. Your office would be located in downtown Juneau on the first floor of City Hall.

Position Duties

Holding a key position in the Sales Tax Office, you will be working with the Sales Tax Supervisor, Sales Tax Compliance Accountant, and other Treasury staff to help our local merchants register and file their CBJ sales taxes. You will be processing confidential tax documents related to the reporting and remitting of general sales, hotel/motel, tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana self-reported taxes, and verifying payments posted correctly.


You will be interacting regularly with merchants and the public in a variety of formats, formal and informal. You will support local merchants by responding to basic tax inquiries and providing guidance on completing sales tax returns and other related forms. You will use your technical and analytical skills to accurately key sales tax returns and identify merchant errors on self-reported tax filings.


Examples of specific duties include:

  • Process sales tax returns and analyze accounts before generating monthly billings.
  • Process new business registrations and coordinate the quarterly mailing to unregistered businesses.
  • Provide excellent customer service in interacting with members of the public in person, over the phone, and by email, responding to questions and concerns.
  • Issue Senior Sales Tax Exemption cards, Resale cards, and Nonprofit Exemption cards.
  • Maintain merchant accounts and files.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:        

High school diploma or the equivalent.


Experience:      

Six (6) months of any combination of job-related post-secondary education and clerical or customer service experience in a job-related area.

Post-secondary Credit: Courses will be credited based on 3 semester/4 quarter hours= 1 month of experience. 

Applicant must document how relevant education and experience meets the above minimum qualification. 

*Transcripts that indicate the credit hours earned for the specific course work will need to be included with the CBJ application.
