About the Position:
The Accounting Technician II plays a key role in supporting the City’s financial functions. Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of accounting support tasks including accounts payable, , reviewing purchase orders, reconciling records, and assisting with other financial functions. This journey-level role requires a strong understanding of accounting procedures, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while providing excellent internal and external customer service.

You’ll collaborate closely with staff across departments and contribute to maintaining accurate, compliant, and timely financial records—ensuring the City can serve the community effectively.

They are comfortable managing multiple priorities—whether it’s reviewing accounts payable transactions, verifying purchase orders, reconciling expenditures, or assisting internal departments with finance-related needs. A commitment to excellent customer service and a positive attitude are key to success in this role.


A Day in the Life Consists of: 
A typical day as an Accounting Technician II includes a blend of detailed financial processing and collaboration with departments Citywide to support accurate and efficient operations. Your day may include:

  • Starting the morning by reviewing your inbox for time-sensitive accounts payable requests and prioritizing urgent items.
  • Reviewing accounts payable entries submitted by departments and verifying that invoices comply with City policies and procedures.
  • Processing accounts payable batches and reaching out to departments to clarify discrepancies or obtain additional information.
  • Verifying that purchase orders have sufficient funds to cover expenditures before finalizing transactions.
  • Collaborating with departments to ensure accuracy, resolve issues, and maintain compliance with established procedures.
  • Submitting accounts payable batches for approval, typically on designated processing days.
  • Printing checks and posting approved batches to the ERP system once authorization is received.
  • Wrapping up the day by responding to emails, documenting updates, and ensuring all transactions are accurately recorded.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or G.E.D.; and one (1) year of progressively responsible experience in performing a variety of financial, budget, and accounting operations, statistical, purchasing, recordkeeping or cashiering duties; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 

Accounting Technicians I (FLEX) may be considered for level II once they have been employed for 12 to 24 months and demonstrate the full range of responsibilities and experience to meet the higher position.
 
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid State driver’s license is required.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience performing technical accounts payable and accounts receivable (AP/AR) functions
  • Strong understanding of AP/AR processes and workflows
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles and practices
  • Ability to learn and navigate new ERP systems effectively
  • Experience handling and reconciling large volumes of cash transactions with accuracy and accountability


Knowledge of:
  • City rules, procedures, and practices governing cash receipting, purchasing, payroll and time reporting, and related financial transactions.
  • Basic procedures and practices, documents, and terminology used in processing accounting transactions and in financial recordkeeping in assigned areas of responsibility.
  • The City's financial accounting system and associated practices and procedures for processing accounting information.
  • Standard office practices and procedures.
  • Customer service practices and telephone etiquette.

Skill in:
  • Operating a computer using spreadsheet and other standard business software.
  • Organizing, setting priorities, and exercising sound judgment within established guidelines.
  • Interpreting, applying, and reaching sound decisions in accordance with City rules, policies, and department procedures.
  • Making calculations and tabulations and reviewing fiscal and related documents and information accurately and rapidly.
  • Understanding and carrying out written and oral instructions.
  • Learning and applying new information.
  • Prepare clear and accurate financial records and reports.
  • Dealing effectively with sensitive and confidential issues and situations. 
  • Communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing. 
  • Maintaining confidentiality of City documents and records. 
  • Exercising tact and diplomacy in interpersonal dealings with sensitive situations.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
