AI Perception & Computer Vision Engineer
About this role
Janicki Overview:
At Janicki Industries, we turn complex ideas into real-world solutions through advanced engineering and manufacturing. Our teams design and build innovative structures, tooling, and systems that support industries including aerospace, space, defense, marine, and architecture.
Across every role, from engineers and technicians to operations and support teams, our people help solve challenging problems, push the limits of design and manufacturing, and create solutions that make a lasting impact.
Department Summary:
The Perception & Computer Vision Engineer develops and deploys the object perception systems that enable our robots to recognize, locate, and interact with parts, tooling, pallets, and other objects in the factory. The role involves configuring and fine-tuning 3D object detection and pose estimation models using commercially available frameworks (NVIDIA Isaac Perceptor, FoundationPose, OpenCV), integrating camera and LIDAR sensors, and building perception pipelines that provide actionable 3D position and orientation data to navigation and manipulation systems. Objects range from standard pallets to one-of-a-kind composite tooling weighing up to 50,000 lb.
Roles & Responsibilities:
- Deploy and configure 3D object detection, classification, and six-degree-of-freedom pose estimation models using NVIDIA Isaac Perceptor, FoundationPose, or equivalent tools
- Integrate RGB cameras, depth cameras, and LIDAR sensors into a cohesive perception pipeline
- Collect, label, and curate training datasets of factory objects; train and validate models for reliable performance across varying lighting, viewpoints, and object types
- Design and execute multi-sensor calibration procedures (camera-to-LIDAR, camera-to-robot-frame)
- Develop automated testing and monitoring for perception accuracy and reliability in production
- Evaluate new perception technologies, sensors, foundation models, and synthetic data generation approaches
- Collaborate with navigation and controls engineers to ensure perception outputs drive effective robot behavior
- Hybrid role requiring on‑site presence at least two days per week, with additional in‑office time as business needs arise.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, or closely related field
- Willingness to work on-site at our Sedro-Woolley or Bellingham, WA facilities
- Due to our ITAR and EAR regulations, applicants must be a US Citizen or of Legal Permanent Resident Status as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b (a) (3).
- This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Secret Security Clearance (U.S. Citizenship Required). Janicki will assist with gaining this access once employed. Special Access Program or other Government Access Requirements are mandatory for this position and requires candidate agreed to enter a Continuous Evaluation program.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with deep learning-based object detection and pose estimation (YOLO, PointNet, FoundationPose, etc.)
- Familiarity with 3D point cloud processing (PCL, Open3D) and depth sensors
- Experience with NVIDIA perception tools (Isaac Perceptor, TAO Toolkit, DeepStream, Jetson)
- Programming proficiency in Python and/or C++ in Linux environments
- Experience with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow)
- Familiarity with ROS/ROS 2 perception pipelines
- Experience with camera calibration, multi-sensor alignment, and sensor fusion
- Experience generating synthetic training data using simulation tools (Isaac Sim, Omniverse)
- Experience with industrial inspection, manufacturing vision systems, or factory automation
- Background working with large, irregularly shaped objects rather than small consumer products
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Computer Vision, Robotics, Computer Science, or related field
We are hiring at three experience levels for this position:
- Entry Level: new graduates with 0–2 years of experience
- Mid-Level: 5+ years of professional experience in computer vision, perception, or a closely related field
- Senior Level: 10+ years of professional experience, with a track record of deploying perception systems on physical platforms
