Job Description

General summary:

Vertex is seeking a talented scientist to join our small molecules Analytical Development group in Boston, MA. This individual will play a central role in advancing transformative medicines by leading select analytical chemistry activities to support small molecules, oligonucleotides, peptides, lipid nanoparticle (LNP)–based formulations and conjugated therapeutics development programs from preclinical through to Phase 1. This role includes active participation in crossfunctional project team meetings, working collaboratively with other R&D functions to resolve project challenges. The ability to work both independently and in a matrix team environment is essential to succeed in this position. 

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

 

  • Project oversight: participate in and support cross-functional teams and effectively communicate issues and solutions to colleagues at all levels within the organization
  • Strategy: contributes to the development, alignment and execution of analytical project team plans and strategies to support drug substance and drug product development including formulationrelevant analytical method development, stability, physicochemical characterization, and validation activities
  • Laboratory expertise: apply handson analytical skills and understanding in laboratory techniques routinely used in the analysis of drug substance, formulated drug product, and lipidbased or particlebased delivery systems
  • Collaboration: work both independently and collaboratively within a matrix team environment
  • Communication: demonstrated ability to effectively present results in both oral and written reports and to productively disseminate ideas across discipline and project boundaries
  • Continuous improvement: develop, contribute, and support improvements in analytical workflows, processes, and ways of working that improve productivity, efficiency, and overall effectiveness


Knowledge and skills:

  • The ability to work successfully in both a team/matrix environment as well as independently
  • Experience developing and applying analytical methods to support formulation development and characterization, including particlebased or lipidbased delivery systems
  • Technical expertise in analytical techniques supporting LNP and particlebased formulation characterization (e.g., LC-CAD, SEC-MALS, DLS, NTA, zeta potential), with additional experience in smallmolecule analytical methods considered a plus
  • Strong troubleshooting skills and problem-solving capabilities
  • Strong analytical data assessment, review and interpretation skills
  • Demonstrated experience in communication of technical data: writing reports and presentation skills
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, managing priorities and maintaining timelines

Education and Experience:

  • Ph.D. (or equivalent degree) and 0-3 years of relevant post-doctoral employment experience, or
  • Masters Degree (or equivalent degree) and 3+ years of relevant employment experience, or
  • Bachelors Degree (or equivalent degree) and 6+ years
  • Relevant professional analytical development experience in the pharmaceutical industry

Pay Range:

$102,800 - $154,200

Disclosure Statement:

The range provided is based on what we believe is a reasonable estimate for the base salary pay range for this job at the time of posting. This role is eligible for an annual bonus and annual equity awards. Some roles may also be eligible for overtime pay, in accordance with federal and state requirements. Actual base salary pay will be based on a number of factors, including skills, competencies, experience, and other job-related factors permitted by law.
