Are you excited about working at the forefront of applied research in an industrial research lab setting? Would you like to advance the state of the art in AI? Thomson Reuters Labs is seeking Applied Research Interns with a passion for developing state-of-the-art techniques to improve generative AI modeling related to building long-term memory features in AI agents, with applications in legal tech ranging from deep research to long-form content generation.

We work closely with product and domain experts to identify compelling solutions at the intersection of user need and technical feasibility. Our team is designing the next generation of expert systems for legal, tax, and risk compliance. You’ll leverage state-of-the-art large language models on a robust AI platform to develop agents and tools that transform the future of work for legal professionals.

As an Applied Research Intern, you will be part of a diverse and interdisciplinary global team of experts. We hire specialists in ML/NLP/IR, as well as Engineering and Design, to drive the company’s digital and AI transformation. Thomson Reuters Labs is known for consistently delivering successful data-driven Artificial Intelligence solutions in support of high-growth products that serve Thomson Reuters customers in new and exciting ways.

The internship at Thomson Reuters Labs typically lasts 6 to 8 months and may align with one or two academic semesters, depending on your availability.

About the Role:

As an AI Applied Research Intern, you will work with a cross-functional team at the intersection of science, product, and engineering to:

  • Innovate: Research state-of-the-art techniques for developing and maintaining long-term memory functionality in AI-agentic systems. You will have the opportunity to try new approaches and learn new technologies. You will contribute ideas and work on solving real-world challenges, ranging from deep research on legal documents to drafting long-form documents in the space of litigation and transactional law.
  • Experiment and Develop: You can be involved in the entire model development lifecycle, building, testing, and delivering high-quality solutions. You will gain hands-on experience in optimizing datasets for agent development, model training and adaptation, and evaluation, and developing automated techniques for the design and evaluation of AI agents.
  • Collaborate: Working on a collaborative cross-functional team, you will learn from and partner with colleagues across the globe.
