ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF PUPIL TRANSPORTATION

Department: Transportation

Pay Grade: U127

FLSA Status: Exempt

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs professional and administrative work supervising the overall school transportation system and vehicle maintenance program; does related work as required.  Work is performed under regular supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Assisting with the planning, scheduling and supervising of the school bus transportation system and vehicle maintenance program; maintaining records and files; preparing reports;

• Assists Director of Transportation with the overall management of the pupil transportation system and vehicle maintenance program;

• Supervises the activities of bus drivers and assistants assigned to transport special education students;

• Receives, investigates and responds to concerns of parents, bus drivers, residents and motoring public;

• Performs bus driver evaluations and bus ramp checks;

• Conducts conferences and meetings with bus drivers;

• Coordinates the scheduling and rescheduling of drivers to fill requests for school bus transportation;

• Responds to vehicular accidents and/or incidents of vandalism;

• Assigns runs to bus drivers; contacts bus drivers after scheduled working hours;

• Supervises routes of special education students; re-evaluates routes and makes necessary changes;

• Supervises the daily activities of coordinators to ensure job functions are performed;

• Performs related tasks as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in business administration or related field and extensive experience in transportation including some supervisory and administrative experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia and possession of the following certifications preferred: Pupil Transportation/Supervisor’s Training and Virginia School Bus Driver Instructor (Train the Trainer).

• Possession of or ability to acquire appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of school transportation and automotive repair facility management; thorough knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of large-scale operations; thorough knowledge of business practices applicable to transportation and garage management; ability to plan and supervise the work of others; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, parents and the general public.        

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word, and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly, or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels, and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; visual acuity is required for depth perception, color perception, night vision, peripheral vision, preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; the worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions.  The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.
