Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) is the state’s lead conservation agency, providing access for outdoor recreation, strengthening communities’ flood resilience, and protecting what Virginians care about: clean water, parks, natural habitat, and open spaces.

The Assistant Park Manager oversees, performs, directs, and manages a variety of tasks to support the daily operations of a Virginia State Park. In this position, you will:

  • Provide daily operations management for the park, including maintenance, natural resource management, camping and cabin facilities, day use areas, water systems, and trails.
  • Assist with the management of the park's business administration, finances, visitor experience, volunteers, human resources, and community relations.
  • Assist in coordinating human resources functions such as recruiting, hiring, training, supervising, and managing employee performance.
  • Provides supervision and inspection of facilities/grounds/equipment maintenance tasks to ensure tasks are completed in compliance with OSHA, VDH, agency standards, and applicable local, state, and federal law.
  • Lead business and marketing initiatives.
  • Assist with routine park operations, including procurement of goods and services, budgeting, developing and providing staff training, engaging with the community, and other duties as assigned.
  • Be responsible for ensuring and maintaining continuity of operations and adherence to the goals and objectives of the park and division in the absence of the Park Manager.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience in leadership and personnel management, including supervising others, training, and evaluating performance.
  • Working knowledge of park interpretive programming and public relations.
  • Working knowledge of park operations, including customer services and cash management.
  • Working knowledge of campground/overnight accommodations and day use management.
  • Knowledge of resource management practices relating to conservation, preservation, and restoration of natural, cultural, historical, and recreational resources.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to provide customer service to external and internal stakeholders, complete business correspondence, reports, and other similar documents.  
  • Strong computer skills.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience with special events, volunteers, and Friends Group management.
  • Knowledge of emergency management and response planning.
  • Experience in budget management.
  • Water system management and water licensure.

  • DCR classified, retired, and wage staff (after six months of service) are entitled to overnight facility discounts, such as:
    • Free camping outside of the Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day period in sites designed for up to six people.
    • Free camping Sunday night through Thursday night (excluding the night before a holiday) from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day.
    • Fifty percent discount on cabins (up to 3 bedrooms) outside of Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, for a maximum of 14 nights. All reservations require a two-night minimum. Bunkhouses, camping cabins, and yurts are included; one-night yurt stays only receive a 25% discount.
