An associate security engineer at Markel has a wide range of responsibilities to secure the enterprise environment. The primary responsibility of this role is to assist in the operational support and maintenance of a variety of security tools and solutions. An associate security engineer is also responsible for the development and maintenance of robust documentation for security tools and solutions. This role will assist other members of the team as they act as a technical resource for policy development, regulatory and industry requirements, risk assessments, penetration tests, enterprise projects and other Markel initiatives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Provide operational support and maintenance for various security tools to include vulnerability management, endpoint detection and response, SIEM, CSPM and other technologies as required.

  • Directly support and shadow senior cyber security engineers in various run the engine tasks to enhance operational effectiveness and foster personal growth.

  • Develop documentation and diagrams to support ongoing security systems operations, maintenance and problem resolution.

  • Assist in the development of security policies, standards, and procedures.

  • Assist in the evaluation of new and emerging security products and technologies.

  • Maintain an ongoing understanding of current and emerging security threats to mitigate threats where possible.

  • Assist senior cyber security engineers on enterprise network, system, and application implementation projects to determine effective security controls and solutions.

  • Serve as a technical resource for other departments within the Global Security Services division.

  • Effectively communicate complex security problems and recommended solutions to an audience with varying levels of security and technical knowledge.

  • Other duties as necessary, including but not limited to: supporting incident response, change management, etc.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology; or 1 year related work experience/certification in cyber security.;  or 3 years experience/certification in Information Technology.

Certification

Certifications that are a plus:

  • Security industry certification(s) such as Security+ preferred.

  • ITIL, preferred

  • Discipline specific certifications

Work Experience/Skill Set

  • Previous experience with the operation and maintenance of information security technologies is desirable.

  • Knowledge of Cloud fundamentals

  • Exposure to Python or PowerShell is desirable

  • Critical thinking.

  • Attention to detail.

  • Strong Microsoft Office knowledge.

  • Good communication, organization, documentation and presentation skills.
