WE LOVE OUR WORK.

  • Interprets/ enforces the Ohio State racing commission administrative rules
  • Makes Decisions not specifically covered by code or rules to insure the integrity of Pari-mutuel racing/wagering
  • Authority over all horses and all persons, licensed, on association grounds during a race meeting as to all matters related to racing
  • Reviews alleged violations; issues rulings after hearing testimony and may levy fines/suspensions and/or make recommendations to the Ohio State Racing Commission for further action
  • Reviews initial applications for license, interviews applicants, clarifies information, and makes a decision on the ability of the applicant to be licensed
  • Advises track management. Law enforcement officers, licensees, owners, trainers, jockeys and the general public on the Ohio Code and administrative rules and resolves regulatory disputes; notifies track management of potential compliance issues with proposed changes in internal procedures
  • Observes the running of live races/replays on video tape and determines if starting gates opened simultaneously. That there was no interference of a horse and jockeys/horses put forth their best effort; may disqualify a horse and change the order of finish if warranted; ensures lock of each race and declares every race official
  • Monitors patterns of wagering and may cancel wagering if irregularities are discovered
  • Works with veterinarians to insure that required body fluid samples are being taken; receives lab reports on positives, non-positives and suspicious results and follows up on outstanding tests; notifies trainers on positive tests and arranges a hearing
  • This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive and team members may also be asked to perform other reasonable related duties as assigned.   • Must be a graduate of a Judge Accreditation School/ Program approved by The Ohio State Racing Commission
  • Must have served as a steward, racing secretary, assistant racing secretary, starter, placing judge, patrol judge or clerk of scales for a minimum of 3 years or has engaged in racing as an owner, trainer, jockey, veterinarian or breeder for at least 5 years and has been an observer in the stewards stand for no less than 30 days
  • Must have 20/20 vision or corrected 20/20 vision and ability to distinguish colors correctly
  • Confidence about moving in close proximity to racehorses
  • An extensive knowledge of the rules of racing; application of appropriate penalties, racing protocols, animal welfare and duty of care requirements; preparation of budgets; development of rules and policy recommendations; and effective skills in public speaking.
  • Must have high standards of ethical conduct. Exhibits honesty and integrity.
  • Must display a high level of initiative, effort and commitment towards completing assignments efficiently. Works with minimal supervision Demonstrates responsible behavior and attention to detail
  • Works and communicates with others in a polite, courteous, and cooperative manner
