JOB DESCRIPTION

Substitute Bus Driver (Day-to-day Substitute on an on-call, as-needed basis)

Responsible to:
Transportation Supervisor

General Description:
The substitute bus driver provides safe and efficient transportation to and from school and on special trips. Maintains discipline when students are on bus. Observes safety regulations, schedules, and traffic laws. Requires certification, and continuous renewal of such, according to regulations. Must maintain drug-free status and participation in random and specific drug sampling as required by law and the district.

Substitute shifts vary based on specific routes between 6:00 am and 5:30 pm; substitutes are called on an as-needed basis and there is no guarantee of how many days you will be called; however, please be sure you can be available during these hours before applying for substitute status.
Qualifications:
Minimum age 21
Possess a valid Washington State Driver’s License with the CDL Class B passenger and air brake endorsement and complete all state requirements for driving school buses.
Must have a current CPR/First Aid Card
Meet physical requirements stated in the WAC 392-144-101 and 102.
Ability to practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including the requirements of confidentiality.
Able to satisfactorily work with students, staff, parents, and other adults.
Able to drive safely and report malfunctions of vehicles.
Willing to work.

Specific Duties:
Drives school buses on approved regularly scheduled routes, field trips, special trips, activity trips and other district trips as assigned.
Performs pre-trip and post-trip safety, operational, and appearance inspections to vehicles.
Maintains the cleanliness of the vehicles.
Maintains control of passengers according to established conduct rules.
Provides the passengers with emergency procedure orientations, and conducts emergency exit drills.
Completes driver forms and records, vehicle-condition reports, route studies and accident reports as required. 05/18/04
Specific Duties continue:
Attends bus driver training courses, job-related and professional-development meetings.
Carries out work in a professional manner
Serves as a resource for training new drivers.
Installs and removes tire-traction devices, when required.
Insures that vehicles have specified minimum fuel content levels.
Reports unsafe route conditions or unsafe acts to bus supervisor.
Performs other related duties as assigned by the Transportation Supervisor.

Maintain effective relationships with building administration and other
building staff.
Willingly assume other duties as necessary.

Establish a positive rapport with students.
Communicate appropriately and effectively with students of various ages,
handicapping conditions, and developmental disabilities.
Assist students to problem-solve to achieve desired wants/needs.
Learn to deal effectively with inappropriate behavior.
Ability to work independently:
Establish daily work priorities.
Make responsible decisions and judgments within the scope of
authority.
Complete assigned tasks without constant supervision.
Be punctual and complete work within allotted time.
Follow departmental and District guidelines, policies and procedures.
Working Conditions:
Work in an environment with varying temperatures.
Wear attire and maintain appearance appropriate to the job.
Must have good health and personal hygiene.

Receipt of the clearance is a requirement for employment. Are you willing to submit to a criminal history background check? The record check shall include a fingerprint check with the cost, currently $50.00, borne by the employee.
