Position Summary

The University of New Mexico, Office of the University Controller, also known as Financial Services, located on Main Campus is responsible for all central accounting functions for the University. It is the responsibility of the Controller's Office aka Financial Services to ensure compliance with all financial policies, rules, and regulations adopted by the University or imposed by external agencies, including state and federal audit requirements, following generally accepted accounting practices. Additionally, the Controller's Office oversees the maintenance of the official financial records of the University.

The University of New Mexico Cashier/Bursar’s Office includes both Student Accounting and the Cashier Department. It serves the entire University, including main, branch, and HSC campuses, with the primary focus on customer service. Student Accounting is responsible for tuition and fee assessment, processing of all electronic and hard-copy statements, refunding of financial aid, billing UNM retirees who choose to maintain university insurance, administering tuition remission, preparing 1098-T tax reports, managing departmental deposits, reconciliation of loan funds, assisting students with questions concerning their accounts, and the collection of outstanding debt over $266 million in tuition and fee revenue, and $10 million in MarketPlace. Additionally, approximately 43,000 financial aid refunds totaling over $100 million dollars are processed. The Cashier/Bursar's Office is held to high standards of confidentiality under FERPA, as well as UNM policy, U.S. military policies surrounding grants, IRS, and numerous other agencies, governmental and private.

What We're Seeking!
The UNM Cashier/Bursar's Office has a unique opportunity for an Accountant 2 position, with the primary focus and responsibility on creating and maintaining the TouchNet MarketPlace Mall. Marketplace is a comprehensive software solution for creating, managing, and operating online stores and sites. It gives UNM department's complete infrastructure for building websites, processing secure online payments for shopping carts and other web-based applications, and offers campus constituents a safe, pleasant, and intuitive online shopping experience. The ideal candidate will also be responsible for the daily and monthly reconciliation of all transactions processed in Marketplace, as well as troubleshooting all issues. Secondary duties will include serving as chair for the tuition appeals committee, assisting in auditing projects as needed by internal and external auditors and agencies, as well as serving as the backup to the refunding role. The selected candidate must have the ability to think and act independently, use sound judgment, pay great attention to detail, and have strong web-based skills.

In addition to experience in fiscal operations, the successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to customer service, the ability to work across entities and operational units, effective communication skills, and excellent time management. The ideal candidate will also be adaptable, able to manage change while maintaining fiscal effectiveness.

Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications.

Conditions of Employment
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and successful completion of at least 12 credit hours of university-level accounting through intermediate accounting; at least 1 year of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.

Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferences should be supported in resume. 

  • Experience with professional accounting in a large, private or public-sector environment
  • Experience providing excellent customer service
  • Experience with online or in-person payment processing such as cash, checks, credit card and ACH
  • Experience using broad-based computer applications, software packages, LAN, web, etc.
  • Experience using Banner or a similar integrated ERP system
  • Experience working in Banner, MyReports, and other UNM financial systems
  • Familiarity with UNM accounting policies and procedures
  • Experience with researching, collecting, analyzing, compiling data, and developing financial reports
  • Experience with balancing and reconciling accounts
  • Proficient with HTML and CSS design
  • Proficient using Excel to illustrate routine financial reports
  • Proficient in the preparation of financial reports and audits as needed
  • Experience using MS Access databases for analysis and reporting
  • Experience using MS Excel spreadsheets for analysis and reporting
  • Experience with creating and delivering presentations to large groups of people
  • Experience working in a team environment, either as a member or as a leader
  • Experience prioritizing and handling a high volume of work
  • Strong organizational and follow-up skills is a plus
  • Familiarity with GASB regulations and other federal and state government regulations
  • Knowledge of university policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal regulations
  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles
  • Experience working under pressure and prioritizing work assignments
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community
