Description of Job

This position supervises staff, multiple units within security, housing, or other prison program areas. Work is oriented towards planning, controlling, and evaluating the program areas and in working with other program supervisors and managers toward achieving common goals and objectives.  
 

Position duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Manage daily operations of a correctional facility and resolving staff, offender and operational issues;
  • Assure sound security practices are exercised and effective communication is maintained within the various departments of the facility;
  • Collaborate with the management team in the formulation and implementation of policies, goals and objectives for the security of the facility/division and care and well being of the offender population; 
  • Evaluate effectiveness of policies and procedures and provide suggestions for change if necessary;
  • Lead, supervise, mentor, and educate staff through the Performance Management Program (PMP);
  • Initiate reviews, approve employee job performance plans and evaluations and, if necessary, make recommendations concerning corrective and disciplinary actions;
  • Ensure all subordinate staff acquire and maintain appropriate training and are in compliance with pertinent training requirements;
  • Approve and oversee staff schedules, schedule changes, and seek approval for overtime as needed to ensure minimum staffing patterns are met and maintained;
  • Interview and recommend appointment of new hires, promotions and transfers;
  • Promote and encourage successful offender re-entry into society; 
  • Maintain work unit expenditures within the allocated budget and enter payroll, ensuring time is accurate and all staff are paid accordingly;
  • This position will be required to work additional shifts and/or hours to ensure safe and secure operations;  
  • Conduct effective and efficient offender case planning to ensure offenders are managed to maximum capacity and progressed or regressed accordingly;
  • Ensure sexually aggressive behavior (SAB) or sexual vulnerability risk (SVR) assessments are being conducted as required;
  • Perform other job related duties as assigned or required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education and Experience: 


High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED)

Four years of *corrections related experience 

*Corrections related experience is defined as experience in which the employee provided a direct service to/with offenders such as correctional officer, teaching, social work, nursing, food service, general maintenance; or worked directly with offender in the implementation of a program such as correctional industries.  Corrections related experience is not typically earned through clerical support positions.   This experience must be clearly described, in your own words, within the work experience section of your application to meet this requirement.

Substitutions:
College course work in corrections, criminal justice, behavioral sciences or a closely related field of study may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis. (You must submit a copy of your unofficial transcripts with your name, college name, degree and date conferred in order to receive credit.)

Preferred Experience/Qualifications:  (Candidates may receive higher rating for possessing any preferred qualification criteria.)

  • One (1) year of corrections related experience (*defined above) at the equivalent level of a CO III or higher;
  • Strong knowledge and experience in performance management and progressive discipline;
  • Strong supervisory experience to include application of conflict resolution;
  • Technical involvement with projects and programs;
  • Strong skills in policy review and development.

Drivers must maintain a valid, non-restricted Colorado driver license, obey traffic laws, and be able to safely operate a motor vehicle. State drivers are expected to maintain a safe driving record consistent with Colorado Division of Human Resources Universal Policy Driving StandardsEligibility to drive a State-owned vehicle, includes holding a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment or residency change and meeting specific driving record criteria. Serious traffic violations, including DUIs or reckless driving, can disqualify drivers for up to seven years.  All State Vehicles are monitored by telematics for safe operation and employees have no reasonable expectation of privacy while using an agency State Fleet vehicle.


Appeal Rights:
