Position Summary

North Point High School seeks a highly qualified Career and Technical Education (CTE) instructor to lead the Child Development Professions program with a focus on the Child Development Associate (CDA) pathway. The instructor will prepare students for careers in early childhood education through rigorous coursework, real-world internship experiences, and CDA credential preparation aligned with MSDE Office of Child Care requirements.

Education and Work Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field.
  • Valid Maryland Secondary Teaching Certification (or eligibility).
  • Experience working with young children in licensed childcare or educational settings.
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain CDA instructional qualifications and MSDE Office of Child Care requirements.
  • Current Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential or higher-level early childhood credential preferred.
  • Experience teaching in a CTE or secondary education setting preferred.
  • Experience supervising student internships or work-based learning programs preferred.
  • Familiarity with Maryland childcare licensing regulations preferred.
  • Strong collaboration, organizational, and leadership skills preferred.
  • Experience supporting CTSOs such as Educators Rising, SkillsUSA, or HOSA preferred.

Essential Job Functions

  • Co-teach and/or teach the following CTE courses: 
    • Child Growth & Development (1 credit)
    • Learning Environments for Preschoolers (1 credit)
    • Child Development Associate Portfolio & Internship I (2 credits)
    • Child Development Associate Internship II (4 credits)
  • Deliver standards-based instruction aligned with Maryland CTE frameworks and CDA competencies.
  • Guide students in developing CDA professional portfolios and completing internship requirements.
  • Integrate current trends and best practices in early childhood education into instruction.

 

CDA & Professional Credentialing Requirements

  • Complete all mandatory training required to instruct CDA coursework.

  • Maintain credentials and required training hours through the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) Office of Child Care.

  • Maintain certification requirements for secondary education teaching licensure.

Work-Based Learning & Childcare Program Support

  • Collaborate with the on-site childcare center director to: 

    • Ensure licensing compliance and program quality.

    • Align childcare curriculum with classroom instruction and industry standards.

    • Assist with childcare curriculum development and inventory management.

  • Support childcare center operations, including: 

    • Parent orientation

    • Development of staff and parent handbooks

    • Creation of schedules and instructional programming

  • Assist in scheduling high school student workers within the childcare program.

Student Leadership & CTSO Participation

  • Actively participate in and support aligned Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), including: 

    • Educators Rising

    • SkillsUSA

    • HOSA (Future Health Professionals)

  • Encourage student leadership, competition participation, and career readiness development.

  • Attend additional CTSO events (competitions, conferences, field trips, etc.) as needed.

Program Leadership & Collaboration

  • Lead Advisory Council meetings (minimum of two annually) to ensure program alignment with workforce and postsecondary expectations.

  • Maintain strong partnerships with industry stakeholders and early childhood education professionals.

  • Collaborate with school administration and CTE staff to ensure program success and student achievement.

School & District Engagement

  • Attend and support required CTE events, including: 

    • CTE Open House

    • CTE New Student Acceptance Night

  • Participate in all North Point High School meetings, professional development, and in-service sessions.

  • Perform additional duties as assigned by Maryland State Law, Board of Education policy, Negotiated Agreement and Building Principal.

 

Working Conditions

 

  • Combination of classroom instruction and hands-on childcare lab environment
  • Requires collaboration with students, families, staff, and community partners
  • May require occasional extended hours for events and advisory meetings

     

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The environmental factors and/or physical requirements of this position include the following: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard. The employee frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
