JOB SUMMARY: The Data Analyst – Summer Intern supports data analysis and reporting initiatives related to safety and operational performance within the transportation environment. This role focuses on assisting with data preparation, validation, analysis, and reporting under the guidance of experienced analysts and engineers.
The internship is designed to provide hands‑on exposure to how data is used to identify trends, support process improvement, and inform decision‑making. The role emphasizes learning, execution, and contribution to defined analytical tasks, rather than independent ownership of safety strategy or regulatory interpretation.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Key Responsibilities:
1. Data Analysis
- Assist with extracting, cleaning, and preparing data from multiple sources to support reporting and analytical needs
- Support analysis of structured datasets to identify trends, patterns, and anomalies under guidance
- Help validate data accuracy and completeness prior to downstream reporting or analytics use
2. Data Organization & Quality Support
- Gain exposure to structured data workflows, including raw, validated, and business‑ready datasets
- Assist in organizing and documenting datasets as they move through defined data layers
- Support basic data transformations aligned with established data modeling and quality standards
3. Reporting & Trend Support
- Assist with building and maintaining reporting outputs using approved analytics tools
- Support routine monitoring of data processes and flag potential issues for review
- Gain exposure to version control and deployment concepts as applicable to analytics workflows
4. Query Development & Documentation
- Write and modify SQL queries to support reporting and analytical tasks under supervision
- Learn and apply foundational SQL concepts to retrieve and structure data
- Assist with documentation of query logic and data definitions
5. Communication & Reporting
- Assist with the development and maintenance of reports, dashboards, and analytical outputs
- Help translate analytical findings into clear summaries for technical and non‑technical stakeholders
- Ensure reporting aligns with defined metrics and documented business requirements
6. Process & Learning Support
- Document analytical processes, data definitions, and transformation logic
- Collaborate with IT and business teams on data‑related projects and ad‑hoc requests
- Participate in meetings, training sessions, and project reviews to build technical and professional skills
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated foundational knowledge in data analysis, analytics, computer science, information systems, statistics, mathematics, engineering, or related quantitative disciplines through education, training, or practical experience
- Exposure to data analysis concepts such as datasets, tables, metrics, and basic analysis techniques
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel and an interest in learning SQL and analytical tools
- Strong attention to detail and interest in data accuracy and quality
- Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and work within established processes
- Clear written and verbal communication skills suitable for an early‑career or developmental role
- Ability to commit to a full‑time schedule during the defined internship period
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exposure through coursework, training, certifications, or projects to SQL, Power BI, Tableau, Microsoft Fabric, or similar tools
- Experience with academic, professional, or personal projects involving data analysis, dashboards, or reporting
- Familiarity with basic programming or scripting concepts (SQL, Python, or similar)
- Interest in pursuing a career path in data analytics, business intelligence, or related disciplines
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, Teams, Outlook)
- Basic understanding of structured data and analytical workflows
- Introductory SQL skills or equivalent exposure
- Proficiency with Excel (formulas, sorting, filtering, basic analysis)
- Exposure to reporting or data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar)
- Familiarity with basic charts, graphs, and reporting concepts
- Analytical thinking and problem‑solving skills
- Attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
- Ability to learn new tools and technologies efficiently
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
