JOB SUMMARY: The Data Engineer – Summer Intern supports data pipeline development, data organization, and analytics platform enablement initiatives within the organization. This role focuses on assisting with data ingestion, transformation, validation, and documentation under the guidance of experienced data engineers and analysts.
The internship is designed to provide hands‑on exposure to modern data engineering practices, including structured data workflows, SQL development, and analytics platform support. The role emphasizes learning, execution, and contribution to defined technical tasks, rather than independent system ownership or production accountability.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
Key Responsibilities:
1. Data Engineering & Pipelines
- Assist with building, maintaining, and supporting data pipelines that move data from source systems to analytics platforms
- Support data ingestion, cleansing, and transformation activities under guidance
- Help validate data accuracy, completeness, and consistency across datasets
2. Data Organization & Platform Support
- Gain exposure to structured data workflows, including raw, validated, and business‑ready datasets
- Assist in organizing and documenting datasets as they progress through defined data layers
- Support basic data transformations aligned with established data modeling and engineering standards
3. Query Development & Data Processing
- Write and modify SQL queries to support data transformations, validations, and analytical use cases under supervision
- Learn and apply foundational SQL concepts such as joins, aggregations, and common table expressions
- Assist with documentation of transformation logic and data definitions
4. Pipeline Monitoring & Reliability Support
- Support routine monitoring of data pipelines and flag issues for review
- Assist with logging, error identification, and documentation of pipeline behavior
- Gain exposure to version control and deployment concepts as applicable to data workflows
5. Collaboration & Documentation
- Partner with Data Analysts, BI developers, and IT teams to support data needs
- Document data pipelines, transformation logic, and technical workflows
- Participate in meetings, training sessions, and project reviews to build technical and professional skills
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated foundational knowledge in data engineering, analytics, computer science, information systems, statistics, mathematics, engineering, or related technical disciplines through education, training, or practical experience
- Exposure to data concepts such as datasets, tables, schemas, and basic transformations
- Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel and an interest in learning SQL and data engineering tools
- Strong attention to detail with an interest in data quality and reliability
- Willingness to learn, accept feedback, and work within established technical standards
- Clear written and verbal communication skills suitable for an early‑career or developmental role
- Ability to commit to a full‑time schedule during the defined internship period
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exposure through coursework, training, certifications, or projects to SQL, Python, Microsoft Fabric, Azure, Power BI, or similar platforms
- Experience with academic, professional, or personal projects involving data pipelines, ETL processes, or data transformations
- Familiarity with basic programming or scripting concepts
- Interest in pursuing a career path in data engineering, analytics engineering, or platform development
SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, Teams, Outlook)
- Basic understanding of structured data and data workflows
- Introductory SQL skills or equivalent exposure
- Proficiency with Excel (formulas, sorting, filtering, basic analysis)
- Interest in data pipelines, data platforms, and analytics infrastructure
- Familiarity with reporting or analytics tools is a plus
- Analytical thinking and structured problem‑solving skills
- Attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy
- Ability to learn new tools and technologies efficiently
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
