Content Producers/Writers, Content Innovation Lab

McClatchy, where accurate, credible and relevant content forms the foundation of our 169-year legacy of excellence, is seeking producers and writers to create content for the McClatchy Content Innovation Lab, the company’s next-generation approach to content.

From barbecue to bourbon, water sports to hiking, and golf to college sports, we are going to develop a steady stream of reader-focused, high-quality content for national and regional audiences.

The new wide-reaching and audience-rich brands will launch quickly, with teams attacking topics tied to dedicated communities of interest around travel, food, outdoor recreation, sports and even crime. We are going to move fast, so writers and producers need to embrace the energy, excitement and fun that will be driven by results.

We are seeking writers/producers who are inquisitive and fueled with ideas. The lab is built to experiment relentlessly and pivot quickly, so writers need to display urgency, adaptability and a bias toward action.  Writing, editing and organizational skills are required and imperative. 

AI and emerging tools will fuel experimentation and productivity. The company’s future depends upon merging talent, personality and subject matter expertise with current and emerging technologies.

Writers/producers need to have a track record of collaboration and flexibility. The writers will be tasked with finding content around data-signaled passion topics and finding creative ways to write and distribute the work. They will contribute to a team producing relevant, credible and abundant content. Every decision will be grounded in audience data, with a goal of dramatically growing known users.

What you’ll bring:

• The position requires a combination of knowledge and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree, including education, experience, skills and knowledge necessary to perform the job.
• 3+ years of experience in content creation, writing or journalism.
• Strong writing, editing and organizational skills with the ability to produce high-quality content on deadline.
• Inquisitive mindset with a constant flow of ideas and creative approaches to content creation.
• Adaptability and flexibility to experiment relentlessly and pivot quickly based on results.
• Collaborative spirit with a proven track record of working effectively in team environments.

What we'll bring:

• The anticipated pay range for this position is between $28.85 - $43.27 an hour. Individual base pay may vary within that range depending on the job-related knowledge, department equity, skills, experience and relevant education.
