About this role

THE POSITION

The Department of Corrections (DOC) is seeking a Corrections Locksmith who enjoys tackling mechanical challenges and is ready to take on new responsibilities. In this role, you will apply your skills to keep the State Correctional Institution (SCI) at Somerset operating smoothly by maintaining essential locking systems. Your work will support daily operations, strengthen security, and help the facility function at its best.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on installing, repairing, and maintaining the locking systems that keep SCI Somerset secure. The work ensures safe conditions for staff, inmates, and visitors while supporting daily operations. As a Corrections Locksmith, you will perform the following duties:

  • Lock System Work: Install, maintain, and repair mechanical, electronic, and pneumatic locks and related mechanisms
  • Key Management: Produce keys, log damaged or lost keys, and adjust issued and master key sets
  • Record Keeping: Maintain detailed logs of maintenance activities and repairs completed
  • Inventory Control: Identify necessary tools and materials, submit purchase requests, and maintain adequate supplies
  • Inmate Oversight: Direct inmates performing non-security tasks, search work areas for contraband, and maintain training, attendance, and wage records

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment, 40 hours per week
  • Work hours are 7:15 AM to 3:15 PM, Monday - Friday.
  • The position is eligible for full retirement benefits at age 50 or 55.
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Two years of experience in the locksmith trade; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training.


Additional Requirements: 

  • Successful completion of basic training in Elizabethtown, PA is required.
  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.

Legal Requirements: 

  • You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements. 

This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding.
