JOB DESCRIPTION

Substitute Custodian (Day-to-day Substitute on an on-call, as-needed basis)

Responsible to: Maintenance Supervisor

General Description: Performs work of a general custodial nature including mopping, dusting, sweeping, vacuuming, emptying waste baskets, washing windows, walls, and wood-work. The custodian will be required to change light bulbs, unplug drains; regulate heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. May need to shovel, and sand walkways, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate. Work may involve the use of mechanical equipment. The custodian will also help keep minor equipment properly attached and in operating condition – tightening pencil sharpeners, oiling locks, etc., and will help unpack and distribute custodial supplies and equipment. This person will also inventory, recommend for order and stock all custodial supplies for the building that person is assigned. Communicates to the 2nd shift custodian special requests and events, and areas needing attention, etc. The custodian will bring to the attention of the Facilities Supervisor areas that need special custodial and/or maintenance attention. Employees work from specific instructions and are expected to perform duties independently.

Substitute shifts vary based on specific schedules between 5:00 am and 12:30 pm OR 1:30 pm and 10:30 pm; substitutes are called on an as-needed basis and there is no guarantee of how many days you will be called; however, please be sure you can be available during these hours before applying for substitute status.

Qualifications:
At least three years experience as a custodian.
Ability to determine the proper cleaning materials and methods for different types of soiled surfaces.
Ability to practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including the requirements of confidentiality.
Ability to seek out soiled areas and properly clean them.
Ability to locate and make minor tightening adjustments to small equipment.
Ability to spot potential maintenance problems.
Ability to plan for the custodial needs and organize to keep an adequate supply on hand and available.

Specific Duties:
Use various custodial equipment in cleaning floors – vinyl, wood, concrete, carpet, etc.
Clean wall surfaces – brick, glazed, blackboard, windows, etc.

Specific Duties continued:
Empty waste receptacles, compact garbage, and empty compactor.
Clean furniture and equipment.
Refill various receptacles as needed.
Note loose objects and tighten into place as needed and oil locks, etc.
Inventories, requisitions, unpack and store all custodial supplies.
Take care of minor maintenance to buildings and equipment.
Recommend repairs and maintenance on equipment and buildings.
Other duties as assigned by the Facilities Supervisor.
Ability to learn the practices and policies of the District Emergency Team.
Ability to be part of the District Emergency Response Team.
Secure buildings and campus as required and needed.
Other duties as assigned.

Working conditions:
Safely lift boxes and equipment up to 50 lbs. unassisted from floor to chest
level.
Move and lift bulky or awkward items.
Stand, bend, and stretch for up to a six-hour shift.
Push heavy carts for long distances.
Work in an environment with varying temperatures.
Wear attire and maintain appearance appropriate to the job.
Must have good health and personal hygiene.
Demonstrate consistent adherence to general industry safety, standards
and practices.
May require some outdoor work in varying climates.
