JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS

We are searching for an undergraduate student to join our Cyber & Information Security Department at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University to assist our cybersecurity and information assurance teams. ARL’s purpose is to research and develop innovative solutions to challenging scientific, engineering, and technology problems in support of the Navy, the Department of Defense (DoD), and the Intel Community (IC).

ARL is an authorized DoD SkillBridge partner and welcomes all transitioning military members to apply.

The successful candidate’s typical duties will include: 

  • Compliance enforcement

  • SIEM configuration and security administration

  • Vulnerability Management

  • Audit and security checks

  • Automation and process improvement

  • Compliance documentation updates

  • Technical writing in policy, process, and procedures

  • Hardware and Software reviews

Required skills and experience include:

  • Excellent communication, customer service, technical writing, and organizational skills

Preferred skills and experience include:

  • Configuration, installation, and support of desktop computing equipment as well as programming

  • Microsoft Windows and Linux systems in a domain environment

  • Familiarity with defensive cyber tools such as Firewalls, SIEM, XDR/EDR, CASB, FIM, IDS/IPS

  • Networking fundamentals

  • System administration and troubleshooting

  • Scripting (bash, python, etc.)

  • Compliance or auditing

  • NIST documentation (e.g. 800-171, 800-53)

  • STIG

Students studying within the field of Information and Cyber Security, Information Science and Technology, or Computer Science science/Engineering are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will work up to 20 hours/week during the fall and spring semesters, and 40 hours/week over the summer. This is a paid internship opportunity located at ARL in State College (primarily operating out of a Science Park Road location). Relocation and housing are not provided.

BACKGROUND CHECKS/CLEARANCES

Employment with the University will require successful completion of background check(s) in accordance with University policies.

 

 

All positions at ARL require candidates to possess the ability to obtain a government security clearance; you will be notified during the interview process if this position is subject to a government background investigation.  You must be a U.S. citizen to apply.  Employment with the ARL will require successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.
