About this role
Job Summary:
We are seeking a resourceful and detail‑oriented Data Analyst who enjoys investigating data, uncovering patterns, and identifying what others may not notice. In this role, you will analyze sales and use tax data — primarily using Excel and research tools — to detect, document, and correct sales/use tax permit and reporting errors.
The ideal candidate is naturally curious, enjoys digging through information, and brings creative thinking to the work. While advanced analytics tools are not required, interest or basic experience with data‑driven problem solving and AI-assisted research (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, Claude) will help you excel in this role.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone early in their career who wants to make a meaningful impact, grow professionally, and help shape a forward‑thinking approach to tax compliance analytics.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Review and analyze sales tax permit data to identify taxpayers that are not properly permitted
- Review and analyze sales tax reporting data to identify taxpayers that may be sourcing and reporting local sales/use tax incorrectly
- Review and analyze additional external data sets and sources – local news, relocation announcements, licensing databases, and more to identify businesses that may not be in compliance
- Use Excel to organize, compare, and analyze datasets; build repeatable methods for ongoing analysis.
- Use AI-enabled tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot, Claude) to enhance research, pattern detection, and efficiency.
- Prepare and submit detailed findings to the Comptroller for corrections or updates.
- Recommend new processes, tools, or data sources to improve overall compliance detection.
- Perform additional duties as needed to support the audit and compliance team.
Education and Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred, not required, majors such as Data Analytics, Business, Economics, Accounting, Math, or related fields are all valuable.
- Accounting degree not required; analytical aptitude and curiosity are more important.
- Experience using Excel for data analysis (pivot tables, lookups, filtering, comparison work).
- Exposure to analytical concepts or basic data tools is a plus, but not required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong analytical and problem‑solving abilities.
- Naturally curious; enjoys researching and discovering information.
- Creative thinker with the ability to identify new data sources and explore unconventional pathways.
- Self‑motivated and comfortable working independently.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Advanced in Excel; willing to learn additional analytical tools.
- Interest in or familiarity with AI-based tools (Copilot, Claude) is valued.
Work Environment:
- Office setting with moderate noise levels.
- Primarily computer‑based work with occasional movement throughout the office.
- Regular communication via phone and email.
Physical Demands:
- Must be able to remain seated for extended periods.
- Regular use of a computer and other office machinery, such as printers and copy machines.
- Occasional movement around the office.
- Frequent communication via telephone.
