IT Intern: Data Science

 

Position Overview

 

The Data Science Intern will be part of the Novelis Data Science & Insights team and will support the development of advanced analytics and machine learning solutions that improve operational performance, quality, sustainability, and cost efficiency across Novelis plants and business functions.

This internship provides hands‑on experience working on real‑world manufacturing and supply chain problems, exposure to enterprise‑scale data platforms, and mentorship from experienced data scientists and engineers. The intern will contribute to projects spanning data exploration, feature engineering, model development, and insight communication.

 

Key Responsibilities

• Support data scientists in analyzing large, complex datasets from manufacturing, supply chain, quality, and business systems
• Assist in data preparation and feature engineering, including data cleansing, transformation, and validation
• Develop and test statistical, machine learning, or optimization models under guidance from senior team members
• Create exploratory data analysis (EDA), visualizations, and dashboards to surface insights for business stakeholders
• Help document analytical workflows, assumptions, and results to support reproducibility and knowledge sharing
• Collaborate with data engineers, subject‑matter experts, and translators to understand business problems and analytical requirements
• Participate in code reviews, sprint ceremonies, and team knowledge‑sharing sessions
• Adhere to Novelis data governance, security, and quality standards while working with enterprise data platforms

Required Qualifications

• Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or a related field
• Basic proficiency in Python (e.g., pandas, numpy, matplotlib, scikit‑learn)
• Understanding of statistics and machine learning fundamentals
• Experience working with data using SQL or similar query languages
• Strong analytical thinking and problem‑solving skills
• Ability to communicate technical findings clearly to non‑technical audiences
• Curiosity, learning mindset, and willingness to work in a collaborative team environment

Preferred Qualifications

• Exposure to machine learning, optimization, or time‑series forecasting
• Experience with data visualization tools (Power BI, Tableau, or similar)
• Familiarity with cloud platforms or data science platforms (Azure, Databricks, Dataiku, etc.)
• Prior internship, academic project, or research experience involving real‑world datasets
• Interest in manufacturing, industrial analytics, or sustainability use cases
