About this role
Position Summary
Caris Life Sciences is seeking a data scientist to join the Research & Development/Precision Medicine group to assist in identification, quantification, and qualification of novel cancer related targets in conjunction with external clients. This research and development role will involve developing and maintaining high quality computational pipelines/processes ranging from data retrieval and organization to producing quantitative statistical insights based on our in-house clinical/genomic data and wet-lab techniques. A successful candidate will require a sharp, driven, goal-oriented individual having an analytical, algorithm-oriented mindset to create reproducible data pipelines and analysis tools, as well as the communication skills to discuss the implications of the scientific results with our research team and leadership.
Job Responsibilities
- Developing, implementing, validating, and maintaining custom algorithms, workflows, processes, and pipelines with the intent to provide support across a team of researchers to achieve the specific goals of assigned projects.
- Developing and validating analytical and visualization tools supporting Target Discovery and Research & Development.
- Supporting statistical methodologies for the design and development of quality control process for diagnostic assays and products.
- Efficiently manipulating and processing large, multisource data sets.
- Responding to and managing ad hoc requests ensuring that accurate, in-depth results/data are delivered in a timely manner.
- Reviewing clinical study reports for statistical content and accuracy.
- Providing general informatics support for laboratory research, technology development, and clinical studies.
- Adhering to coding and documentation standards as well as managing deliverables in the areas of responsibility.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Mathematics, Data Science, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Engineering, or related scientific field.
- 0-5 years of experience in Data Science or related technical field with particular experience programmatically working with large, structured and unstructured data sets.
- Ability to understand biological/pathological questions and formulate statistical and data analysis methods to provide solutions to novel problems.
- Proficiency in at least one general-purpose programming language (Python, R, Java, C/C++). Python is preferred.
- Familiarity with the Linux/Unix environment.
- Experience with common Python libraries such as Pandas, Numpy, Matplotlib, etc.
- Ability to communicate quantifiable results through tables, figures, and plots.
- Proficiency in verbal and written communication skills to clearly explain complex technical details.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, Outlook, and general working knowledge of internet for business use.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with clinical health records (insurance claims and patient data).
- Experience with state-of-the-art machine learning and deep learning methods and frameworks.
- Familiarity with bioinformatics processes (NGS, WES, WTS, as well as specific file types and formatting bam, vcf, etc).
- Experience with shell scripting and script based procedural development.
- Familiarity with developing python-based applications/dashboards (streamlit, fastapi, plotly, etc.).
- Familiarity with Git and queries from SQL or related database families.
- Familiarity with AWS infrastructure.

- This position requires periodic travel and some evenings, weekends and/or holidays.
