GENERAL PURPOSE
This position is responsible for supporting the special education teacher by assisting in addressing the diverse physical, instructional, and behavioral needs of students with disabilities in inclusive and specialized settings. The role includes implementing individualized programs and fostering an environment that supports students’ academic, social-emotional, and functional growth.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Supports teachers with instruction and classroom management for students with disabilities as outlined in Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).

  • Assists in creating a nurturing and stimulating environment that meets students' individual developmental and emotional needs.

  • Facilitates the development of fine and gross motor skills through structured and engaging activities.

  • Performs instructional and clerical tasks to assist in daily classroom operations and learning activities.

  • Collaborates in various settings, including pre-kindergarten, general education classrooms, special education classrooms, and resource or intervention programs.

  • Facilitates learning tasks, such as explaining concepts, encouraging student participation, and monitoring progress during assessments.

  • Provides support to students with a variety of disabilities, including Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD), Intellectual Disabilities (ID), Emotional Disabilities (ED), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and Physical Disabilities (PD).

  • Participates in therapeutic crisis intervention and supports positive behavior strategies to promote a safe and inclusive classroom environment.

  • Collects, records, and organizes data to support instructional goals and IEP objectives.

  • Uses adaptive and assistive technology to support student learning and accessibility needs.

  • Provides personal care and physical support, including assistance with toileting, hygiene, dressing, and mobility equipment such as wheelchairs or gait trainers.

  • Ensures student safety and supervision in the absence of the teacher.

  • Collaborates with teachers and staff to adapt and differentiate lessons and activities to meet individual student needs.

  • Maintains accurate records, manages classroom materials, and operates instructional and office equipment.

  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required for non-Title I schools).

  • 48 college credits or successful completion of the ParaPro assessment (required for Title I schools).

  • Experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Familiarity with child development, group dynamics, health, safety, and first aid practices.

  • Understanding of evidence-based instructional strategies and accommodations for students with disabilities.

  • Knowledge of age-appropriate learning activities, instructional methods, and behavior management techniques.

  • Adaptability to various situations and ability to work under frequent interruptions.

  • Proficiency in using adaptive and assistive technology for instructional purposes.

  • Strong organizational skills for maintaining accurate records and documentation.

  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, teachers, parents, and colleagues.

  • Skill in operating standard office equipment and software (e.g., Microsoft Word, data management systems).

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Primarily indoor work environment with moderate temperature levels.

  • Exposure to noise, disruptive behaviors, and bodily fluids.

  • Frequent standing, walking, lifting/pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds, and maneuvering adaptive equipment (e.g., wheelchairs) for extended distances.

  • Frequent stooping, crouching, reaching, kneeling, and sitting.

  • Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations.

  • Capacity to read manuals, follow multi-step instructions, and perform basic mathematical calculations.

  • Regular and reliable attendance, with adherence to an established schedule, is essential.
