This Opportunity

WSP is seeking a Deputy Safety Manager to join our Construction Management team in Herndon, VA.  This role will be physically reporting to our client site. 

 

 

Your Impact

Job Duties:

  • Support the Safety Manager in overseeing safety and security activities for contractors and project personnel assigned to the Long Bridge Project.
  • Assist in implementing construction and rail safety policies, procedures, and programs established for the PMSS and Design-Build teams.
  • Coordinate with VPRA project managers, and contractors to help ensure compliance with VPRA safety requirements and project-specific safety plans.
  • Conduct routine field inspections to identify safety hazards, unsafe work practices, and non-compliant conditions.
  • Assist in developing and implementing corrective actions and mitigation measures to address identified risks.
  • Deliver and support safety orientations, toolbox talks, and other safety training activities for project personnel.
  • Work collaboratively with contractors, subcontractors, engineering professionals, and project stakeholders to promote a strong safety culture.
  • Perform safety audits and inspections to verify proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE), signage, work zone controls, and compliance with established safety procedures.
  • Monitor compliance with company policies, applicable regulations, and project safety requirements, and assist with incident and near-miss investigations.
  • Attend daily job briefings, observe field operations, document safety observations, and prepare daily safety reports.
  • Escalate significant safety concerns, trends, and incidents to the Safety Manager and project leadership as appropriate.

 

 

Who You Are

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 7-10 years of construction safety experience on infrastructure, transportation, heavy civil, or rail projects.
  • Experience supporting safety programs on active construction sites with multiple trades and contractors.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA standards, particularly 29 CFR 1926 Construction Standards.
  • Familiarity with rail, transportation, or heavy civil construction environments.
  • Experience conducting safety inspections, audits, Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs), and incident investigations.
  • Ability to identify hazards, assess risks, and recommend practical corrective actions.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with field personnel, contractors, and project management teams.
  • Experience preparing safety reports, maintaining documentation, and tracking corrective actions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and digital safety management platforms.
  • Detail-oriented, organized, and proactive with a strong commitment to workplace safety.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting the direction of the Safety Manager.
  • First Aid/CPR Certification or ability to obtain certification within six months of hire.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certification.
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification.
  • Experience on Class I railroad, passenger rail, or transit construction projects.

Compensation:

Expected Salary (all locations): $160,000-175,000/yr

WSP USA is providing the compensation range that the company in good faith believes it might pay and offer for this position, based on the successful applicant’s education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities in addition to internal equity and specific geographic location.
