Position Summary
The Director, Benefits is responsible for enterprise strategy, governance, administration, and continuous improvement of employee benefits, leave, retirement, time off, and wellness programs across a multi-brand organization. This role provides leadership and strategic guidance to all operating brands and shared services while balancing enterprise consistency, brand-specific needs, regulatory compliance, financial stewardship, and employee experience.
This leader partners closely with HR, Finance, Legal, Payroll, HR Technology, vendors, and business leadership to develop scalable, competitive, and employee-centered programs that support attraction, retention, engagement, business performance, integration efforts, and the organization’s employee value proposition.
Responsibilities:
Key Responsibilities
Enterprise Benefits Strategy & Program Design
- Establish and execute the enterprise benefits strategy across all brands, ensuring alignment with business objectives, talent strategy, organizational culture, and the employee value proposition.
- Lead the design, evaluation, and ongoing optimization of health and welfare, retirement, wellness, leave, and employee support programs.
- Develop enterprise standards, governance practices, and program philosophies that promote consistency, scalability, and compliance across brands.
- Monitor market trends, legislative changes, workforce demographics, and emerging practices to recommend innovative and competitive solutions.
- Evaluate program effectiveness through utilization, engagement, cost, and employee experience metrics and recommend enhancements when appropriate.
Multi-Brand Integration & Harmonization
- Lead benefits, leave, and time-off integration activities for newly acquired or affiliated brands.
- Conduct program assessments, gap analyses, and harmonization recommendations while balancing organizational objectives, employee experience, and financial stewardship.
- Build scalable enterprise frameworks that allow for efficient administration across multiple brands and employee populations.
- Identify operational, compliance, and employee experience risks associated with acquisitions and integrations and develop mitigation strategies.
- Partner with HR leadership to implement future-state program designs and transition plans.
Benefits Administration Leadership
- Oversee enterprise administration of health and welfare programs, retirement plans, leave programs, paid time off programs, employee assistance resources, and wellness offerings.
- Ensure accurate, timely, and efficient delivery of benefits-related services through internal teams, third-party administrators, and shared service partners.
- Establish service delivery standards, performance metrics, and operational controls that support a high-quality employee experience.
- Champion process improvement and automation initiatives that increase efficiency, reduce risk, and improve scalability.
- Lead annual enrollment and ongoing benefits education and communication strategies across all brands to improve employee understanding, adoption, engagement, utilization, and perceived value of available programs.
Leave of Absence & Time Off Strategy
- Provide enterprise oversight for all leave and time off programs, including statutory, company-sponsored, disability, parental, military, and accommodation-related programs.
- Ensure compliant administration of leave programs across federal, state, and local jurisdictions.
- Establish enterprise policies, processes, and governance structures that create a consistent and equitable employee experience.
- Partner with Legal, Employee Relations, Payroll, and HR leaders on complex leave and accommodation matters.
Retirement, Wellness & Employee Support Programs
- Provide strategic leadership for retirement programs, including 401(k) plan design, governance, administration, fiduciary oversight, compliance, and vendor management.
- Direct enterprise wellness and well-being strategies focused on supporting physical, financial, emotional, and social health.
- Oversee employee assistance, hardship and support funds, and other programs designed to support employee well-being.
Compliance, Governance & Risk Management
- Ensure compliance with applicable benefit, retirement, leave, and privacy regulations including ERISA, ACA, COBRA, HIPAA, FMLA, and related federal, state, and local requirements.
- Oversee audits, regulatory reporting, plan filings, governance activities, controls, and documentation standards that protect the organization and employees.
- Partner with Legal and Compliance teams to assess regulatory changes and implement required program modifications.
Vendor Management & Financial Stewardship
- Lead strategy and negotiations with brokers, consultants, carriers, TPAs, wellness providers, and retirement partners.
- Manage vendor performance through formal service standards, scorecards, and governance reviews.
- Develop and oversee benefits and wellness budgets and provide financial analysis supporting benefit plan decisions.
- Balance employee value, market competitiveness, and organizational cost management objectives.
Leadership & Stakeholder Partnership
- Lead and develop a high-performing team responsible for benefits administration, leave administration, time off management, retirement programs, and employee support programs.
- Serve as a trusted advisor to HR leadership and senior business leaders on benefits strategy, employee experience, compliance, risk management, and integration priorities.
- Build strong cross-functional partnerships across Finance, Payroll, Legal, HR Technology, Shared Services, vendors, and business functions to drive accountability, service excellence, and continuous improvement.

Required
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Finance, or related field.
- 10+ years of progressive benefits leadership experience, including enterprise-level responsibility.
- Experience leading benefits strategy and administration in a multi-site, multi-state, or multi-brand environment.
- Deep expertise in health and welfare benefits, retirement plans, leave administration, and time off programs.
- Experience leading acquisitions, integrations, harmonization efforts, or large-scale program transformations.
- Strong understanding of ERISA, ACA, COBRA, HIPAA, FMLA, 401(k) plan governance, and related regulations.
- Demonstrated success leading teams, influencing senior leaders, and managing complex vendor relationships.
Preferred
- Experience within retail, hospitality, restaurant, convenience retail, distribution, or other large frontline workforce environments.
- CEBS, CBP, SHRM-SCP, SPHR, or related certification.
- Experience with Workday or comparable HR technology platforms.
- Experience supporting multiple legal entities or branded organizations under a shared services model.
