About this role
Manhattan Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal seeks a Director of Borough Organizing to be part of his new team. The Director will be part of the Office of the Manhattan Borough President’s (MBPO) senior team and will report to the Chief of Staff.
The Director must be committed to seeking out new and better ways for the MBPO to connect with and deliver for the borough’s diverse neighborhoods, communities and residents. In coordination with other staff, the Director of Borough Organizing will lead borough-wide organizing efforts designed to connect Manhattan residents around shared challenges and opportunities. The Director will serve as the primary driver of the Borough President’s “Manhattan Tenants Union” initiative, and the central focus of this role will be organizing and collaborating among tenants across Manhattan who share common circumstances. The Director will work directly with tenants and community members on the ground and across neighborhoods, building relationships and networks that strengthen collective advocacy and help inform the Borough President’s policy and community engagement priorities.
Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Building and maintaining borough-wide organizing networks among Manhattan residents, with a particular focus on tenants experiencing shared housing conditions or landlord relationships;
- Identifying opportunities to connect tenants and residents across neighborhoods who face similar issues, and facilitating communication and collaboration among them;
- Conducting outreach and engagement in buildings and communities across Manhattan, including attending community meetings, tenant gatherings, and neighborhood events;
- Working across Units – including Community Affairs, Constituent Services, Policy, and Communications – to align organizing efforts within the Borough President’s broader policy priorities and public engagement strategies;
- Developing organizing strategies and tools that help residents share information, coordinate advocacy efforts, and elevate common concerns;
- Supporting the Borough President’s initiatives by gathering feedback from residents and bringing community perspectives into policy and program development;
- Assisting with special projects identified by the Borough President, including events related to organizing efforts.
