- Lead the daily operations and overall performance of the construction department
- Manage, coach, and develop Project Managers and other construction team members
- Establish clear expectations and hold employees accountable for performance
- Ensure Project Managers follow company processes and consistently execute their responsibilities
- Monitor individual and departmental KPIs and address performance concerns promptly
- Conduct regular project, production, and financial review meetings with Project Managers
- Evaluate department capacity, staffing, subcontractor availability, and resource needs
- Partner with the General Manager to establish departmental goals and execute business priorities
- Build a culture centered on accountability, teamwork, customer service, and continuous improvement
- Take ownership of the construction department’s revenue, gross profit, production, and operational results
- Monitor project financials and department performance through regular reporting and review
- Hold Project Managers accountable for maintaining project budgets, schedules, documentation, and profitability
- Review estimates, supplements, change orders, and project financials as needed to ensure accuracy and protect margins
- Identify underperforming or at risk projects and work with the responsible Project Manager to establish a corrective action plan
- Identify opportunities to improve workflow, efficiency, quality, and financial performance
- Ensure the department has the staffing, subcontractors, and resources needed to support production goals
- Provide oversight and direction to Project Managers throughout the construction lifecycle
- Ensure Project Managers accurately estimate, scope, schedule, and budget each project
- Confirm that Project Managers secure signed contracts, required deposits, and customer approvals before work begins
- Ensure permits are obtained and projects comply with applicable building codes and local requirements
- Monitor project progress, anticipated completion dates, costs, and customer satisfaction
- Ensure Project Managers maintain complete and accurate project documentation
- Review escalated project concerns and guide Project Managers in developing appropriate solutions
- Conduct project reviews, site visits, and walkthroughs as needed to evaluate progress, quality, or performance
- Ensure completed work meets approved plans, specifications, scopes of work, and company quality standards
- Oversee the department’s subcontractor and vendor network
- Ensure Project Managers properly identify, evaluate, and manage qualified subcontractors
- Establish expectations for subcontractor pricing, quality, timeliness, professionalism, safety, and documentation
- Monitor subcontractor performance and address recurring concerns
- Support negotiations involving pricing, terms, capacity, or performance issues
- Maintain adequate subcontractor coverage to support current and anticipated production needs
- Establish and maintain customer service expectations for the construction department
- Hold Project Managers accountable for providing clear and consistent customer communication
- Support Project Managers with escalated customer concerns when leadership involvement is appropriate
- Ensure warranty claims are assigned, tracked, and resolved promptly
- Monitor project quality and implement improvements when recurring issues are identified
- Promote a customer experience that supports referrals, repeat business, and the company’s reputation
- At least five years of construction management or construction operations experience preferred
- Previous experience leading Project Managers and overseeing a construction department, division, or similar operation
- Restoration, reconstruction, insurance repair, or disaster recovery experience is strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience managing employees, department financials, subcontractor relationships, and operational performance
- Strong understanding of estimating, scoping, supplements, change orders, contracts, permitting, scheduling, and construction project execution
- Proven ability to lead teams, improve performance, and protect project profitability
- Strong leadership, communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to evaluate multiple projects and competing priorities from a departmental perspective
- Comfortable reviewing financial reports, project performance, and departmental KPIs
