About the Department


The South Carolina State Museum is seeking enthusiastic, engaging, and dependable museum Educators to help inspire wonder and a love of learning through dynamic educational experiences.

Working under the direction of the Education Coordinator, Educators deliver high-quality educational programming for school groups, families, camps, and public audiences across a variety of museum learning environments. Whether leading a hands-on STEAM program for a group of 100 students, facilitating an astronomy lesson, exploring South Carolina history, or supporting special events, Educators help create welcoming, engaging, and memorable experiences for every guest.

Educators are collaborative team members who enjoy working with children, families of all kinds, and teachers while supporting our mission to inspire wonder through meaningful experiences.

Responsibilities & Duties

Educational Programs:

  • Deliver engaging educational programs for school groups, camps, homeschool programs, families, and public audiences.
  • Facilitate hands-on and auditorium-style learning experiences across a variety of content areas, with a heavy focus on science and STEAM, along with some history, art, natural history, and astronomy content.
  • Adapt teaching strategies to meet the needs of diverse learners while creating welcoming and inclusive learning environments.
  • Support inquiry-based, maker-centered, and experiential learning approaches that encourage wonder, creativity, and exploration.
  • Ensure the physical and emotional safety of participants during all educational experiences.

Departmental Support:

  • Assist with setup, preparation, cleanup, and reset of classrooms, educational materials, and program spaces. 
  • Support camps, special events, Accessibility Mornings, homeschool programs, scout workshops, and other educational initiatives as assigned.
  • Assist with school group arrival, visitor wayfinding, and other daily education operations as needed.
  • Participate in staff trainings and professional development opportunities.
  • Occasionally assist with outreach programs and educational events throughout South Carolina as assigned.
  • Contribute to a positive, collaborative team environment and provide excellent customer service to museum guests.
  • Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Audience Engagement department.

Position Duties

  • High school diploma required; college coursework in education, child development, science, history, museum studies, or a related field a plus.
  • Experience working with children, youth programs, camps, museums, recreation, or informal learning environments preferred.
  • Enthusiasm for working with learners of all ages.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Dependable, adaptable, and able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365, including Outlook (particularly calendar management), Word, Excel, Teams, SharePoint, and OneDrive.
  • Willingness to learn a broad range of museum content and instructional techniques.

Other Qualifications

ADA:

  • Must be comfortable working in low-light level environments
  • Must be able to regularly lift upwards of 50lbs.
  • Requires long periods of standing and walking around, including climbing several flights of stairs multiple times a day
  • Requires working in a variety of environments including indoor office spaces and outdoor locations.
