Illumio's Architecture/Platform team designs the scalable, secure, and resilient systems that power our cloud-based cybersecurity platform. As an Architecture Platform Engineering Intern, you’ll work on foundational infrastructure, distributed systems and analytics ( based on rules, statistics and/or ML/AI) that support Illumio’s mission to empower organizations to contain breaches before they become cyber disasters. This internship offers hands-on experience with cloud-native technologies, architectural design patterns, machine learning, and performance optimization. You’ll collaborate with senior architects and engineers to solve real-world challenges and contribute to the evolution of our platform.

What You'll Do:

  • Investigate and implement distributed systems at scale aspects of the cloud-based security analytics platform
  • Investigate and implement analytics at scale, using distributed systems concepts and leverage AI/ML to process and surface these to the end users
  • Help identify and solve scalability challenges, ensuring the platform can handle increasing loads and larger customer bases
  • Understanding of front-end and back-end integration, especially in systems that handle large datasets
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams
  • Passion and interest in building efficient, highly scalable systems and improving user experience
  • Be empowered to take ownership of your own summer project where you provide technical solutions for real world problems. You will get to own the design, implementation, and quality of your work
  • Be an active participant of an existing engineering scrum team. Here you’ll learn Agile development and have daily interactions with your peers

Your Tool Kit:

  • Currently enrolled in a full-time Bachelor’s or Master’s degree program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, with an expected graduation date in Winter 2026 or Spring 2027
  • Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Java, Go, Python or Ruby
  • Familiarity with web development technologies (e.g., REST APIs, front-end frameworks) is a plus
  • Familiarity with applied AI/ML, scaling ML use of LLMs
  • Familiarity with Git or other version control systems
  • Exposure to or knowledge of scalability, distributed systems, or cloud computing (could be a part of curriculum / coursework)
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical skills, and attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills

What You'll Gain:

  • Hands-on experience designing and building cloud-native architecture at scale
  • Exposure to distributed systems, performance optimization, and real-world infrastructure challenges
  • Opportunities to contribute to architectural decisions and technical strategy
  • Ownership of a meaningful summer project with mentorship and support from experienced architects
  • Daily collaboration with engineering teams and participation in Agile development workflows
  • A deeper understanding of how scalable systems are built to support enterprise-grade cybersecurity solutions
  • Insight into the latest advancements in machine learning for security, including how AI/ML is applied to enhance threat detection, analytics, and platform intelligence
