THE POSITION

The Environmental Chemist 2 role with the Department of Environmental Protection invites you to help strengthen environmental health across the state. This position allows you to support scientific work that improves cleanup standards and public understanding. You will join a team that works toward safer land use and cleaner communities. Your contributions will help advance a program that benefits both people and natural resources.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This role supports statewide environmental goals by providing technical expertise within the Land Recycling Program. The work focuses on guidance, regulations, public information, and technical consultation relating to environmental chemistry. As a Environmental Chemist 2, you will perform the following duties:

• Technical Guidance: Provide explanations and advice on environmental chemistry issues for regional staff
• Consultation Support: Serve as a consultant on technical matters connected to the Land Recycling Program
• Document Review: Assess risk assessments and related work products and offer clear and constructive comments
• Public Information: Prepare written materials that support public understanding of land recycling activities
• Training Activities: Assist with developing and presenting training seminars for staff and consultants
• Data Systems: Develop and maintain databases and tracking tools used for program operations

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

• Full-time employment
• Work hours are 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
• Telework: You may have the opportunity to work from home (telework) part-time, up to 3 days per week. In order to telework, you must have a securely configured high-speed internet connection and work from an approved location inside Pennsylvania. If you are unable to telework, you will have the option to report to the headquarters office in Harrisburg. The ability to telework is subject to change at any time. Additional details may be provided during the interview.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

• Two years of experience as an Environmental Chemist 1; or
• Eight years of professional chemical analytical experience which included analyzing a wide variety of chemicals and interpreting the analysis; or
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training.

Other Requirements:

• You must be able to perform essential job functions.

This position is not subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding. If no applicable union-covered bidders apply, other applicants may be considered.

Promotion Without Examination (PWOE):

• Class Restrictions for Promotion Without Examination Only - You must have or have held regular civil service status in one of the following classifications: 
  • Environmental Chemist 1
  • Chemist 2
• Employees who previously held regular civil service status in the job title of the position being filled are also eligible for promotion without examination.
• The promotion without examination requirements are issued in accordance with merit system employment regulations.
• Meritorious service is defined as (a) the absence of any discipline above the level of written reprimand during the 12 months preceding the closing date of the posting, and (b) the last regular or probationary performance evaluation showing an overall rating of satisfactory or higher. 
• Applicants must have a minimum of one year in the next lower classes by the posting closing date with no break in service.
