Description

The Executive Underwriter will grow and develop a book of complex construction-focused inland marine risks—from builders risk and installation projects to contractors’ equipment and large-scale infrastructure developments. Applies deep technical judgment, market insight, and data-driven analysis to evaluate project exposures, select profitable business, and develop appropriate coverage, terms, conditions, deductibles, limits, and pricing within established underwriting authority. For the most complex, unusual, or high-line-size accounts, partners with senior leaders and internal experts to develop creative, disciplined solutions that protect Liberty Mutual’s portfolio while supporting the success of construction clients.

Responsibilities

  • Underwrite and manage construction-focused business: Evaluate builders risk, installation, contractors’ equipment, project cargo, and infrastructure accounts, considering project scope, construction type, location, values, schedule, contractors, subcontractors, catastrophe exposures, loss history, and risk controls. Make analytical, data-driven decisions regarding risk selection, coverage, pricing, terms, conditions, deductibles, and limits.
  • Build profitable broker and client relationships: Manage a portfolio of brokers, agents, and clients; maintain a strong market presence; and develop new opportunities aligned with Liberty Mutual’s construction and inland marine appetite. Serve as a trusted technical resource and representative of Liberty Mutual in the marketplace.
  • Apply technical and market expertise: Analyze complex construction exposures and clearly articulate coverage differences, manuscript wording, valuation considerations, delay and soft-cost exposures, project-specific conditions, and other inland marine coverage issues. Stay current on construction trends, market conditions, legal developments, legislation, and regulations affecting underwriting decisions.
  • Manage portfolio performance and accumulation: Provide data-driven insights into portfolio profitability, rate adequacy, growth opportunities, concentration, and accumulation across projects, geographies, catastrophe zones, contractors, and types of construction. Contribute meaningfully to business and marketing planning.
  • Collaborate across the organization: Partner effectively with Underwriting Support, Claims, Risk Engineering, Actuarial, Product, Legal, Compliance, Distribution, and underwriting leadership to deliver sound decisions, improve outcomes, and address complex construction risks.
  • Drive underwriting excellence: Participate in cross-functional initiatives that improve underwriting quality, processes, tools, appetite, and consistency. Model effective collaboration and support initiatives designed to strengthen construction-focused inland marine capabilities.
  • Develop talent and share expertise: Mentor, coach, and train underwriters and internal partners on construction risk assessment, coverage analysis, pricing, documentation, portfolio management, and emerging inland marine exposures. Provide internal and external thought leadership based on technical expertise.
Qualifications
  • Degree in Business or equivalent typically required
  • A minimum of 7 years expected, typically 10 years or more, of progressive underwriting experience and/or other related business experience
  • CPCU or professional insurance designation preferred
  • Proven analytical ability to evaluate and judge underwriting risks within scope of responsibility
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate complex analyses and information in understandable written and/or oral directives to other persons in the organization for underwriting or training purposes
  • Demonstrated effective communication and interpersonal skills in dealing with internal and external stakeholders
  • Must demonstrate comprehension of most complex technical underwriting issues and be capable of defining and implementing necessary underwriting and administrative processes/workflows to properly manage or administer those issues
  • Proven track record of developing and underwriting profitable business

The full salary range for this role reflects the competitive labor market value for all employees in these positions across the national market and provides an opportunity to progress as employees grow and develop within the role.
