THE POSITION
Are you ready to apply your strong decision making skills in a role that helps keep communities safe? As a Firearms Background Specialist 2 with the Pennsylvania State Police, you have the chance to train new employees, review important applicant information, and support critical decisions within the Pennsylvania Instant Check System (PICS). You help maintain the accuracy and integrity of a system relied on by communities throughout Commonwealth. This position offers a rewarding blend of teaching, analysis, and public service.
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position supports PICS operations by training staff, reviewing firearm purchase requests, and ensuring compliance with laws and procedures. It plays an essential role in guiding determinations and maintaining accurate, up to date training materials. As a Legal Assistant 2, you will perform the following duties:
- Staff Training: Prepare training materials, guide employees through training phases, and monitor trainee progress
- Decision Support: Review applicant information and make determinations regarding firearm purchases or licenses
- Information Verification: Confirm identities, check criminal and civil records, and follow procedures for wanted individuals
- Law Review: Monitor changes in laws, regulations, and policies that affect unit operations
- Training Participation: Attend training sessions that support instructional responsibilities
- Operational Tasks: Process required documentation, maintain accurate records, and complete additional duties as assigned

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
- Full-time employment, 37.5 hours per week
- Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with a 30-minute lunch.
- Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
- Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY
Organization or Location Restrictions:
- This posting is restricted to Pennsylvania State Police employees only.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:
- One year as a Legal Assistant 1; or
- Four years of responsible clerical, investigative or enforcement work including one year of legal clerical support experience; or
- An equivalent combination of experience and training.
Additional Requirements:
- You must have the ability to obtain and maintain an active Commonwealth Law Enforcement Assistance Network (CLEAN) certification issued by the Pennsylvania State Police within the probationary period and maintain the same for the duration of employment in this job.
- You must be able to perform essential job functions.
Legal Requirements:
- This job title has been identified as performing critical duties. Prior to placement in this job title, the selected candidate regardless of their current job, must submit a Report of Medications for screening by the Pennsylvania State Police Medical Officer.
- You must pass a background investigation and meet Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) compliance requirements.
This position is subject to the provisions of a collective bargaining agreement or memorandum of understanding. If no applicable union-covered bidders apply, other applicants may be considered.

- Seniority/Promotion Unit: 019 - Pennsylvania State Police Headquarters including Academy and Troops H (all stations) and T (Highspire and Newville).
Permanent full-time Legal Assistant 2s can be considered for lateral transfer.
