About this role
Position Summary
A worker who assembles subparts into completed assemblies prior to welding as specified by blueprints, work orders, or oral instructions under direct supervision.
Duties and Responsibilities
• Perform fitting tasks under the direction of the immediate supervisor.
• Assess blueprints, drawings, and specifications to establish work requirements.
• Organize work orders and prepare accurate reports regarding tools, equipment, and materials.
• Conduct measurements, layout, and fitting tasks per drawings and diagrams.
• Provide visual quality assurance.
• Complete assigned job duties as required by supervision.
• Operate punches, grinders, drills, saws, oxy-fuel torches, plasma cutters, and other hand tools.
• Cut, drill, bevel, and grind subparts as required for quality end products.
• Perform welding preparation such as grinding and beveling.
• Move and organize materials to support fitting tasks.
• Maintain a clean and orderly workstation.
• Install temporary bracing to prevent distortion during welding.
Work Experience
Qualifications and Requirements
• High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• Valid driver’s license.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Knowledge of basic shop mathematics.
• Experience in heavy structural fitting and fabrication.
• Ability to read and understand blueprints, shop drawings, and welding symbols.
• 1–2 years of structural steel fitting experience.
Safety Requirements
• Adhere to all Southland Steel Fabricators safety rules, policies, and procedures.
• Maintain orderly and clean work areas.
• Attend all required safety meetings.
• Inspect tools and equipment daily to ensure they are defect-free.
• Use hand and power tools safely with proper guards in place.
• Wear appropriate PPE for assigned tasks.
• Required PPE:
• Welder helmet with appropriately shaded filter lens and safety glasses.
• Clothing in good repair without holes or frayed edges; cotton pants and shirts required.
• Heavy flame-resistant gloves.
• Respirators when welding harmful metal alloys or ventilation is inadequate.
• Steel/hard toe boots.
• Hearing protection.
• Cutting Steel with Torch:
• Wear properly shaded safety glasses with face shield or cutting goggles.
• Use approved friction lighters or approved devices to light the torch.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
• Ability to stand for long periods of time.
• Ability to occasionally pull, push, carry, or lift up to 50 lbs.
• Ability to withstand bending, squatting, or crouching.
• Ability to frequently handle tools, equipment, or materials.
• Ability to work in inclement weather conditions including cold, heat, and humidity.
