JOB DESCRIPTION
Substitute Kitchen Assistant (Day-to-day Substitute on an on-call, as-needed basis)
Responsible to: Food Service Supervisor
General Description: Entry position into food service program; closely supervised. Performs a combination of duties including routine food preparation, food serving, cleaning, dishwashing, cashier during lunch or breakfast, clean-up of equipment, and transportation of food to other school locations.
Substitute shifts vary based on specific schedules between 6:00 am and 1:30 pm; substitutes are called on an as-needed basis and there is no guarantee of how many days you will be called; however, please be sure you can be available during these hours before applying for substitute status.
Qualifications:
Accurately perform math calculations.
Able to work quickly and to perform several operations simultaneously.
Maintain accurate records.
Able to operate cash register/or computer, or willing to learn.
Capable of making correct change.
Capable of some heavy lifting – 30 lbs.
Ability to practice ethical and professional standards of conduct, including the requirements of confidentiality
Capable of driving food service vehicle.
Possess a valid Washington State driver’s license.
Good health and personal hygiene.
Must possess current Washington State Health card.
Specific Duties:
Assists in the food preparation for lunch.
Count trays, set up serving area.
Assist the cook in checking and monitoring temperatures of food items.
Assist the cook in ensuring items are cooled, served, and stored at proper temperatures.
Clean kitchen area and equipment according to Health Department.
Maintain freezer, refrigerators, and storerooms in an orderly manner.
Inform cook or supervisor of supply needs. Assist inventory and plan for the use and purchase of cooking ingredients.
Make suggestions for new ideas.
May serve as cashier during meals.
Serve lunches following County Health Department regulations.

Communicate appropriately and effectively with students of various ages.
Assist students to problem-solve to achieve desired wants/needs.
Learn to deal effectively with inappropriate behavior.
Ability to work independently:
Establish daily work priorities.
Make responsible decisions and judgments with the scope of authority.
Complete assigned tasks without constant supervision.
Be punctual and complete work within allotted time.
Follow departmental and District guidelines and procedures.
Working conditions:
Safely life boxes and equipment up to 30 lbs. unassisted from floor to chest
level.
Move and lift bulky or awkward items.
Stand, bend, and stretch for up to a six hour shift.
Push heavy carts for a distance.
Work in an environment with varying temperatures.
