Heavy Equipment Operator

Required

• Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
• One (1) year of experience in motorized equipment operation at the journey level.
• Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
• May be required to operate a commercial motor vehicle , as defined below, and possess a Commercial Driver's License CDL-A.
• "Commercial Motor Vehicle" is defined as a motor vehicle or combination of motor vehicles used in commerce to transport passengers or property if the motor vehicle has any of the following:
  • A gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds inclusive of a towed unit with a gross vehicle weight rating of more than 10,000 pounds.
  • A gross vehicle weight rating of 26,001 or more pounds.
  • Is designed to transport 16 or more passengers, including the driver.
  • Is of any size and is used in the transportation of hazardous materials requiring placards.
• May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, accept call-back overtime or regular overtime, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
• Knowledge of the methods and skills in the use of equipment, materials, and tools appropriate for motorized equipment operation.
• Knowledge of common hazards and necessary safety precautions.
• Knowledge of local, state, and national laws.
• Knowledge of basic computer skills.
• Ability to read and interpret instructions, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals.
• Ability to estimate time and material needs, determine when the repair is not economically practical, and perform routine tasks and arithmetic computations.

Preferred

• Completion of apprentice-level training in the operation of heavy motorized equipment.

1. Operates motor graders, bulldozers, draglines, truck-mounted cranes, hydraulic dredges, scrapers, crawler loaders, backhoe, semi-tractor trailers, and related heavy motorized equipment.
2. Makes cuts and fills finished grades, excavates trenches, digs catch basins.
3. Rechannels creeks or streams and excavates silt.
4. Transports heavy motorized equipment to designated locations.
5. Drives semi tractor-trailer as assigned.
6. Inspects equipment daily and performs maintenance such as changing oil, checking fluids, diagnosing tread wear, and replacing batteries.
7. Keeps records and makes reports of work accomplished and materials used.
8. Performs related duties as required or assigned.
