Histology/Necropsy Technician

Chenega Services and Federal Solutions, LLC., a Chenega Professional Services’ company, is looking for a Histology/Necropsy Technician to provide necropsy, histology, and pathology laboratory support to pathologists and scientists within the Pathology Division. The position performs independent tissue collection, tissue accessioning, and routine and specialized histological processing on submitted cases, including molecular pathology techniques such as immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. The incumbent supports necropsy operations, laboratory management, specimen processing, pathology documentation, equipment operation, quality activities, SOP development, and research support initiatives. This position works independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team while supporting pathology operations, biocontainment activities, and laboratory research programs in BSL-1 through BSL-4 environments.

• Shall prepare the instruments and other materials necessary to conduct necropsies. Collect specimens such as tissues, culture samples, and blood or body fluid samples during necropsy.  Dissect, or assist with the dissection of laboratory animals and properly collect, label, and preserve/fix tissue specimens as required. Dispose of animal carcasses IAW institute safety guidelines and procedures.
• Shall prepare preliminary record of gross findings using appropriate pathological terminology. Prepares and transmits gross photographic images.
• Shall accession submitted cases into the pathology database and performs database entry procedures utilizing computer hardware and software. Maintain accurate records of all specimens.
• Shall perform routine and special histological procedures, including but not limited to molecular techniques such as immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization, involving specimen trim-in, processing, embedding, sectioning, staining, and archival of completed case materials.
• Shall assist in the maintenance and operation of the ultrastructural and molecular pathology laboratories. Ensure laboratories meet biosafety and good laboratory practice (GLP) requirements, as applicable. Ensures laboratories are fully stocked, operational, and meets all inspection requirements.
• Shall evaluate, modify, or develop procedures to meet special requirements of particular research studies. Shall mentor and skill verify new technicians to ensure trainees follow all Institute biocontainment training and laboratory biosafety requirements. Advise and train new laboratory personnel and investigators on methods and materials needed to assure proper tissue handling and collection, and preservation of specimens for a wide variety of histological, immunohistochemical, and special molecular or pathology relevant/related procedures and assays. 
• Shall operate, calibrate, and clean specialized equipment IAW standard operating procedures (SOP) to ensure accurate, high-quality results to meet stringent clinical, research and GLP requirements.
• Shall prepare documentation to request changes to current Division SOPs.  Track and adhere to sensitive timelines.  Perform quality control checks and acquire all signatures necessary for SOP change approval.  Review and report changes needed for Periodic Review documents.  Revise existing SOPs and point of contact for Pathology SOP issues and questions.
• Shall perform required job-related training, to include GLP training as necessary IAW Pathology Division policies and procedures.
• Shall act as alternate user and assist the subject matter expert with operating microscope slide scanning instrumentation (i.e.; Olympus VS200 Research Slide Scanner or equivalent) and to prepare and organize digital image files for pathologist review.
• May be required to attend 1 scientific conference annually to obtain continuing education and to ensure cutting edge knowledge and techniques are maintained. 
• Shall participate in manuscript development and preparation for publication of research as required. 
• Other duties as assigned

• Bachelor's degree in Biology, Histotechnology, Pathology, Biomedical Science, Life Sciences, or a related scientific discipline.
• Typically requires five (5) to seven (7) years of related laboratory experience consistent with a Laboratory Technician 4 labor category.
• BPRP enrollment is required and shall be held and maintained IAW the provisions in this contract and all applicable regulations.
• HT (ASCP) certification or significant directly related histology and pathology laboratory experience.
• Experience performing necropsy procedures, tissue collection, specimen handling, tissue accessioning, and pathology laboratory support activities.
• Experience performing routine and specialized histological procedures.
• Experience supporting molecular pathology techniques including immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH).
• Experience independently performing laboratory procedures and scientific protocols.
• Experience operating, calibrating, and maintaining laboratory instrumentation.
• Experience supporting laboratory operations, biosafety requirements, and GLP-compliant environments.
• Experience training and mentoring laboratory personnel.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary scientific environment.
• Ability to work variable schedules when required, including occasional evening and weekend work.
• Ability to perform duties in BSL-1 through BSL-4 laboratory environments..
• Successfully pass background and drug screening

Preferred Qualifications:

• HT (ASCP) certification.
• Experience supporting pathology, histology, molecular pathology, or biomedical research programs.
• Experience performing necropsy procedures in research or laboratory animal environments.
• Experience with immunohistochemistry, in situ hybridization, and advanced histological techniques.
• Experience supporting GLP-regulated laboratory environments.
• Experience developing, revising, and maintaining SOPs and associated quality documentation.
• Experience operating digital pathology systems, slide scanners, or image management platforms.
• Experience supporting manuscript preparation, scientific publications, or technical reports.
• Experience training laboratory personnel and investigators.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Knowledge of pathology, histology, molecular pathology, and laboratory research methodologies.
• Knowledge of necropsy techniques, tissue collection, specimen preservation, and pathology support procedures.

• Knowledge of specimen tracking systems, pathology databases, laboratory documentation, and record management practices.
• Ability to independently perform complex histology, pathology, and laboratory procedures.
• Ability to evaluate, modify, and develop laboratory procedures supporting specialized research requirements.
• Ability to train, mentor, and skill verify laboratory technicians and staff.
• Ability to advise investigators and laboratory personnel on tissue handling and pathology procedures.
• Ability to prepare SOP revisions, technical documentation, reports, and quality records.
• Ability to operate digital pathology and slide scanning equipment.
