JOB DESCRIPTION

Substitute Health Room Assistant/NurseHealth Room (All schools within the district serving students in grades P–12)

We are seeking qualified substitutes to support student health services across the district. Assignments may vary and can include any school that serves students in grades P–12.
Substitute Health Room Assistants/Nurses play a critical role in ensuring the safety and well-being of students and staff. This position functions within health rooms located in public school buildings. Substitutes will interact with a wide range of students, including those with physical and medical challenges. Some lifting may be required. Exposure to common childhood illnesses is possible.
Responsible to: Building Principal/District Nurse/Executive Director of Special Education

Specific Duties:

Provides a variety of health/medical services to serve the needs of students
Provide first aid and first respondent care as appropriate
Administer medication as directed and allowed by statute, policy, and/or other regulations
Current CPR/First Aid endorsement
Document care of injured and ill student in the Health Room Check-in log
Establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, students, and parents
Ability to follow directions from a doctor’s instructions regarding a student’s medical or physical condition
Organize activities and work independently
Maintain student health records
Read, write, speak and communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents
Screen and treat minor student illness and injuries
Function as a team member with staff
Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or District Nurse
Perform specific assigned duties on building-level and district emergency teams

This position requires adaptability, sound clinical judgment, professionalism, and a strong commitment to student care and confidentiality.
Required Competencies:
LPN, RN, or other relevant medical certification preferred
High school diploma or equivalent
Valid First Aid and CPR certification
Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
Prior experience working with school-aged children, preferably in an educational setting
Ability to assess health needs and seek further medical attention when necessary
Knowledge of professional and ethical standards related to school health services
Ability to administer medications as directed
Strong organizational skills and the ability to work independently
Effective verbal and written communication skills
Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with students, staff, parents, and administrators
Experience or training in emergency preparedness
Familiarity with medications commonly prescribed to school-aged children and their administration
Ability to screen and treat minor student illnesses and injuries
Experience working with students with disabilities or complex medical needs
Ability to collaborate as part of a team and participate in departmental meetings
Experience or training with student health care plans, including diabetic care plans
Sensitivity to the diverse health needs of students

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, comprehend, and interpret in English effectively
Ability to follow instructions in English in written and oral form
Ability to write effectively in English
 
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete and abstract variables 
Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or list form
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Employees must have the ability to physically perform tasks relating to the position.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to walk, stand, sit, and occasionally crouch, kneel, or run as well as frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: There are no unusual environmental conditions.  Most activities are performed indoors in an office or classroom setting. The employee has responsibility for the safety and well-being of others and must be able to interact with others.
