About the Department




The City of Ames is looking to place an Intern with the Human Resources Department to at least finish the spring semester, and possibly work throughout the summer of 2026.  

Under supervision of the Director of HR, this internship role is responsible for assigned projects that are designed to offer exposure and experience in a wide array of functional HR areas including talent acquisition, regulatory requirements, Federal and State compliance, benefits, and talent management.

The hours would be between Monday and Friday, during office hours of 8am to 5pm.  Maximum worked hours would be 10-15 during while classes in session, with an option to work up to 20 hours during the summer months.  

Position Duties

Provides general administrative and project support to the HR Department.

Will be given the opportunity to learn and assist with many phases of the hiring process including recruitment, applicant tracking, interview coordination, pre-employment screening, on boarding process and file management.

Participates in various research projects and/or special projects, as assigned.  This particular recruitment will have a focus on ADA compliance and keeping inventory on documents needing updates and assisting with compliant updates of such documents.  May assist with updating user guides, job descriptions, training guides, and intranet resources, etc.

May support Training and Development programing by performing research, assisting with coordinating classes, rooms, materials, registration, etc.

Performs administrative support for the department such as copies, faxes, preparing materials, preparing employee files, and filing.

Assists with preparing correspondence.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

College student or a recent college graduate from a Bachelor's or Master's degree program in Human Resources or related field. Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.0 scale.  

Dependable and able to adhere to an agreed upon schedule.

Previous experience/knowledge of an HRIS and hiring/interviewing practices preferred.

Proficiency using Microsoft Suite and internet research tools.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to confidently and clearly communicate information in writing and verbally.

Ability to maintain confidentiality of all aspects of job responsibilities.

Ability to work independently.

Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Cooperative attitude with team-oriented disposition.

Desire to pursue a professional career in Human Resources.

Selection Process:

The selection process consists of an evaluation of education and experience; phone interview; on-site interview; completion of reference checks and a criminal background check, which includes a sex offender registry check.  All candidates will be notified by email of their application status.

Characteristics of Work: Primarily sedentary; frequent standing, walking; frequent lifting and carrying objects under 10 pounds; occasionally lifting or carrying objects up to 50 pounds.

Vision Requirements: The minimum for those whose work is involved primarily with extensive reading, and preparing and analyzing text and/or data, and the use of a computer terminal.

Environmental Conditions: The employee ordinarily works in an office environment and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions.

Equipment Used to Perform Essential Functions: Computer hardware such as keyboard, monitor, printer, etc. Computer software, payroll system, word processing, spreadsheet, internet, database, etc. Reference materials. General office equipment such as writing utensils, files and file cabinets, telephone, copy machine, etc.
