Job Summary
Provide opportunities for secondary and post-secondary students to serve as Human Capital Interns. Interns will gain hands on experience across all major areas of Human Resources while learning HR policies and procedures within a government environment. This internship offers comprehensive exposure to HR functions—including job profiling, recruitment, onboarding, employee and labor relations, training and development, performance management, compensation, classification, HRIS, and organizational development—while partnering with departments to support broader organizational goals
Essential Functions:
Assist with job profile reviews, updates, and documentation.
Support recruitment activities, including posting job announcements, screening applications, and coordinating interviews.
Participate in onboarding processes, such as preparing new hire materials and assisting with orientation logistics.
Contribute to compensation and classification research, data gathering, and documentation.
Provide support in employee and labor relations by organizing case files and preparing meeting materials.
Assist with training and development initiatives, including scheduling sessions and preparing training resources.
Participate in performance management cycles by tracking submissions and preparing summary reports.
Assist with organizational development projects, including workflow mapping or process improvement documentation.
Minimum Qualifications:
Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Excel for data entry, reporting, analysis, and creating charts.
PowerPoint for developing clear, professional slide decks.
Word for drafting documents and correspondence.
Eligibility Requirements:
Currently attend a Maryland high school as a junior/senior
Currently attend a Maryland higher education institution
Graduated from a Maryland high school, but currently attend a non-Maryland higher education institution
Graduated from a Maryland high school, and is currently enrolled or graduated from a career technical training program
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Strong written and verbal communication skills for interacting with applicants, employees, and department partners.
Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information appropriately.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills to support HR projects and process improvements.
Customer service orientation to provide helpful, professional support to internal and external stakeholders.
Research skills to gather information on HR best practices, policies, and compliance topics.
Additional Information
Background Check
Eligible candidates under final consideration for appointment to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.
Probation
All persons, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory six-month probation.
