THE POSITION

Are you passionate about technical and skilled work in the mechanical and electrical installation, operation, maintenance and repair of HVC and refrigeration systems / equipment? The HVAC Technician role in the Environmental Control Section within the Department of General Services (DGS) offers an exciting opportunity to work in the operation, maintenance, repair, and installation of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) and refrigeration systems. You will Identify and troubleshoot complex equipment malfunctions , perform diagnostics, disassemble / reassemble equipment, repair and replace parts and controls, and test to ensure proper functions of equipment. DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This role focuses on maintaining and repairing complex HVAC and refrigeration systems across a wide range of Commonwealth facilities. Your work supports safety, comfort, and reliability for everyone who uses these spaces. As an HVAC Refrigeration Technician, you will perform the following duties:

  • Preventative Maintenance: Perform routine inspections and maintenance on HVAC refrigeration systems in controlled environments
  • Equipment Repair: Diagnose faults and repair components within chillers, boilers, pumps, and related systems
  • System Troubleshooting: Use test instruments to investigate electrical, airflow, water flow, or refrigerant issues
  • Pipefitting Tasks: Inspect, repair, replace, and install piping systems and related fittings
  • BAS Navigation: Access building automation systems to review alarms, analyze system performance, and suggest improvements
  • Safety Compliance: Follow department safety standards and ensure compliance among lower-level staff

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Full-time employment
  • Work hours are 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, Monday - Friday, with 30-minute lunch.
  • Note: This position is considered essential. You will be required to report to work during emergencies and office closings. 
  • Telework: You will not have the option to telework in this position.
  • Salary: In some cases, the starting salary may be non-negotiable.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Successful completion of the HVAC and Building Automation Technician trainee program (commonwealth title); or
  • Three years of experience in the maintenance, repair, and installation of HVAC and refrigeration systems, units, and equipment including one year working with commercial or industrial HVAC or refrigeration equipment and controls; or
  • An equivalent combination of experience and training which includes one year working with commercial or industrial HVAC or refrigeration equipment and controls.


Special Requirements: 

  • All employees must obtain EPA Universal Refrigerant Transition and Recovery Certification from an approved provider within 6 months of employment.
  • This position requires an active motor vehicle license.

  • You must be able to perform essential job functions.
