NOTE: This summer internship is for up to 13 weeks, starting from the first day of the internship and ending no later than September 4, 2026. Interns are expected to work 35 hours per week in person.

About the Team
At the NYC Department of Buildings, we are responsible for ensuring the safe and lawful use of buildings and properties by enforcing the NYC Construction Codes, Energy Code and Zoning Resolution. The Information Security unit is responsible for developing and executing information security, strategy, policy, enforcement, compliance, risk mitigation, cybersecurity, and cybersecurity awareness. Responsibilities also encompass supporting security assessments of IT infrastructure and applications while defining security standards and developing and implementing security controls.
Position Responsibilities
Under the direction and supervision of the Director, Information Security, the intern will:
- Support information security operations staff as they execute monitoring and securing analytics activities.
- Participate in the implementation of security policy, standards, procedures, and guidelines.
- Gain exposure to information security roles, processes, and activities, and their application within DOB’s environment in support of security and compliance audits.
- Conduct research on potential exploits based on user or entity behaviors, endpoint threat detection, network behavior analytics, alerts/alarms, and managed security reports.
- Help maintain security documentation and records.
- Assist with network and system administration tasks.
- Conduct research on emerging cybersecurity threats and technologies.
- Perform Threat Intelligence Monitoring and Vulnerability Management.
- Assist with malware analytics, risk management, and testing.
- Assist with the implementation of security improvements.
- Support the development and implementation of cybersecurity awareness training for employees.
- Provide technical support to end-users as needed.
- Evaluate software products.
- Assist on special projects and other tasks/duties as needed.
Major / Field of Study
- Must be enrolled in an accredited undergraduate program in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Demonstrated interest in one or more of the following areas: Cybersecurity, Network Security, Application Infrastructure, Software Development and Configuration, Software Development Lifecycle

As of June of the Program year the prospective intern must be a student matriculated in a college or be a recent college graduate (winter/spring term of the Program year).
NOTE: Appointment to this title is only valid for the duration of the Program, June - August each year.
