Department Overview
The
Internal Audit Department provides objective, independent evaluation over the
bank's risk management, governance, and internal controls to confirm they are
functioning effectively and are in compliance with policies and regulations.
Position Overview
The
Internal Audit intern will support the Internal Audit department's objectives
by evaluating and testing the Bank’s process and controls and assisting with
audit documentation as well as potential special projects. The Internal Audit
intern will work closely with audit professionals and various associates from
business units.
Role and
Responsibilities
1. Audit Planning and Execution:
- Assist with audit planning activities, including background research and walkthrough preparation
- Support risk based audit assignments by performing control testing under supervision
- Review transaction samples and documentation for accuracy, completeness, and compliance
- Prepare clear, well-organized workpapers that document audit procedures and evidence.
- Help maintain audit documentation in accordance with internal audit methodology and standards.
2. Risk Assessment and Control Evaluation:
- Support control testing efforts to assess the design and operating effectiveness of key controls.
3. Collaboration and Team Support:
- Participate in walkthrough meetings with business units and document meeting minutes.
- Collaborate with audit team members to gather supporting documentation and clarify testing inquiries.
- Assist in follow-up procedures for previously identified issues to validate remediation progress.
4. Continuous Improvement:
- Assist with special projects and audit initiatives involving audit quality, data analytics / use of artificial intelligence (AI), and audit efficiency in line with the Internal Audit Strategy.
5. Regulatory and Compliance Awareness:
- Gain exposure to regulatory expectations applicable to community and regional banks.
- Assist in verifying compliance with internal policies and regulatory requirements where applicable.
6. Stakeholder Engagement:
- Build positive working relationships with internal audit colleagues and business unit staff.
- Demonstrate professionalism, curiosity, reliability, and strong ethical judgment at all times.
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, Information Systems, Economics, or a related field; graduate students preferred
- No prior audit experience required
- Experience with Microsoft Excel, including filters, pivot tables, and formulas
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Ability to analyze data and identify trends or irregularities
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and critical thinking
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially in stakeholder communication and audit documentation
- Professional demeanor with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Highly organized, self‑motivated, and able to manage multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment
- Willingness to learn, ask questions, and seek clarification
- High level of integrity, objectivity, and ability to handle confidential information responsibly
- Basic understanding of internal controls, risk concepts, or accounting principles (preferred)
- Experience with data analytics tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, Tableau) (preferred)
- Experience using GenAI tools (e.g., Microsoft Copilot) (preferred)
- Experience with collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams (preferred)
- Coursework or exposure to auditing, risk management, data analytics, accounting, or related areas (preferred)
Progress Review
- Tasks with defined competencies, timelines, and expected outcomes
- Evaluate deadline management, quality of work, application of critical thinking, independence, time management, and effective communication of delays or questions
- Weekly touchpoints between the Manager and Intern to provide timely feedback
- Midpoint review with the Senior Audit Manager and/or Chief Audit Executive
Experience
and Knowledge Development
The
intern will work side by side with auditors and business stakeholders,
contributing to live audit engagements while sharpening analytical and
communication skills and developing a deeper understanding of banking
operations. They will gain firsthand experience performing control testing,
selecting samples, identifying exceptions, and supporting audits across various
processes within the Bank. The role also provides opportunities to develop
professional documentation skills and strengthen analytical and problem‑solving
abilities. Through regular interaction with stakeholders, the intern will
continue to refine communication skills while gaining valuable visibility and
experience that may support consideration for full‑time
placement in Internal Audit.
