About this role

At Hypertherm Associates, we design and build innovative industrial cutting solutions that help our customers succeed — and we believe great products are created when technical excellence, customer insight, and thoughtful strategy come together.

We are a 100% associate-owned company headquartered in Hanover, NH, with a global presence in 26 countries. For over 50 years, we’ve been recognized as a top employer and a leader in industrial cutting technology.

This summer internship is designed for students who are curious about how data, markets, and technology shape product decisions in a real‑world manufacturing environment.

The Product Strategy & Market Intelligence intern will support Hypertherm Associates' Product Center of Excellence by delivering actionable market and technology insights. This internship focuses on (1) mapping complex industrial ecosystems and purchasing dynamics and (2) assessing competitive and adjacent technologies to waterjet cutting solutions for displacement opportunities. Deliverables will include executive-ready market maps, competitive economics benchmarking, and a technology displacement whitepaper with strategic implications for portfolio investment and go-to-market decisions.

Key Projects & Deliverables:

Project 1: Industry Market Map (e.g., Energy)

  • Identify major manufacturers/OEMs and segmentation (by application, region, production model)
  • Map ecosystem: customers, tier suppliers, service providers, integrators
  • Document decision journey: spec-in drivers, qualification process, budget owners, buying criteria
  • Create visuals: value chain map, stakeholder map, and decision flow

Project 2: Technology Displacement Assessment (Waterjet)

  • Identify competing cutting technologies (direct and indirect substitutes)
  • Compare economics (capex/opex), throughput, precision, material compatibility, maintenance, safety
  • Assess software/workflow integration (CAD/CAM, nesting, automation, data connectivity)
  • Map route-to-market: OEM vs integrator-led sales, channel partners, bundling patterns
  • Synthesize implications: opportunity level by segment, where to invest/defend, positioning gaps

Suggested “Deliverables”

  • 1–2 page executive summary + appendix of sources
  • Market map visuals (ecosystem + buying process)
  • Competitive benchmark tables (economics + performance)
  • 10–15 page whitepaper (or 6–8 slide deck) with recommendations
  • “So what” implications for portfolio strategy and GTM

Who you are and what you bring:
