The temporary student is a non-Yale student working in a temporary capacity under a designated set of guidelines (as established by a program or grant) which specifies that only a student can be hired. This position will provide our interns with an opportunity to immerse themselves in all facets of the communications industry, expose them to public safety practices, principles, and coordination among other University departments.
- Work with staff in an inclusive and professional environment.
- May attend meetings within the Public Safety organization and must respect and maintain the sometimes confidential nature of security-related information
- Research, develop, edit, and schedule content for Public Safety’s social media platforms.
- Identify and submit web edits to the Office of Public Affairs and Communications web team.
- Assist in writing news articles for website and creating the bimonthly newsletter.
- Assist in the development and execution of community engagement initiatives, including student orientations
Note: This position can have a flexible schedule. The schedule is determined by the supervisor (with employee input) and may be modified from time to time to meet the changing needs of the staff and the Public Safety department.
Preferred qualifications:
1. Students majoring in communications or public relations is preferred.
2. Basic understanding and interest in the communication and public relations industries, and public safety
3. Social media content creation experience
4. Writing experience.
Skills and Abilities:
1. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. High attention to detail and accuracy.
2. Strong organizational skills, with focus on high priorities despite interruptions. Excellent communication, interpersonal, customer service skills with all levels within the organization. Ability to tailor communications based on the informational needs of the intended audience. Ability to excel both independently and as a team member.
3. Proficient using a variety of social media platforms, including but not limited to Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, and X
4. Proficient in editing social media content in Adobe Premiere and Instagram Edits
5. Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Outlook (or similar email system). Comfort with technology and a willingness to learn and master new applications as needed. Experience in Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
